The development could be a major blow to Russia’s military space ambitions, US analysts said. Cosmos 2553 was launched just weeks before Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Over the past year, it has shown signs of uncontrolled tumbling, according to radar data from LeoLabs and optical tracking shared by Slingshot Aerospace with Reuters. The satellite is believed to serve as both a radar tool for intelligence gathering and a platform for radiation testing....

Already bracing for funding cuts under a new Trump administration, U.S. Treasury officials are calling on Congress to unlock $20 billion in IRS enforcement money that is tied up in legislative language that has effectively rendered the money frozen.Hoping to unlock the funds in upcoming budget negotiations, Treasury officials are rushing for action before President Joe Biden's term ends. The $20 billion in question is separate from another $20 billion rescinded from the agency last year. Ukraine has seized more Russian territory in two weeks than Russia has seized in Ukraine all year. Reinforcements sent by Moscow failed to stop a Ukrainian surprise offensive in Russia’s Kursk region during its second week, creating a dilemma for the Kremlin – to further tap Russia’s invasion force in Ukraine by diverting more battalions to defend Russia, or to throw new conscripts into the war. Moscow has so far kept regular recruits into the armed forces on rotation at home, sending only contract soldiers to the bloody battlefields of Ukraine. But the Kursk offensive has changed that delicate political...

A 53-year-old registered sex offender found slain in his apartment Tuesday morning suffered a single gunshot wound, authorities said. Police identified the man as James Garrett. He is believed to have moved to the apartment sometime in July. Police Capt. Jeff Schneider said the amount of blood at the scene made it difficult for investigators to determine immediately what caused Garrett's death. After an autopsy Tuesday evening, Yakima County Coroner Maury Rice attributed the death to a gunshot wound, but he declined to release further details because of the active investigation.
