The IRS is at risk of losing $20 billion in funding without legislative intervention

Already bracing for funding cuts under a new Trump administration, U.S. Treasury officials are calling on Congress to unlock $20 billion in IRS enforcement money that is tied up in legislative language that has effectively rendered the money frozen.

Hoping to unlock the funds in upcoming budget negotiations, Treasury officials are rushing for action before President Joe Biden's term ends.

The $20 billion in question is separate from another $20 billion rescinded from the agency last year. However, the legislative mechanism keeping the government afloat inadvertently duplicated the one-time cut.

There would be 6,000 fewer audits of wealthy individuals and 2,000 fewer audits of large corporations, and the agency would have to go on a hiring freeze, he said.

“The IRS is going to potentially have to make dramatic decisions about stopping hiring and starting to budget for a world which they don't have $20 billion which will stop a lot of their progress,” Adeyemo said. ”If they don't get that $20 billion that is at risk they would run out of enforcement money at the current pace sometime in fiscal year 2025."

Get rid of the IRS entirely! Start by cutting their funding bigly.

great comment from the site

OMG, $2 billion for 6,000 audits? That’s over $300k per audit! It’s like having two full-time employees work an entire year just to audit one file. How efficient is that? This is why DOGE is urgently needed.

I think everyone would agree with that. Everyone except members of Congress. They just love to carve out special tax rules for their donors.

Way worse than that!

It’s actually 20 billion for 8000 audits, which would come to 2.5 million per audit!!

Sounds dire.

You know, if a ship is sinking, you can start by offloading any weight. Like, maybe, 87,000 new hires.

And one might consider selling off properties and office spaces.

And maybe give golden parachutes to 50,000 workers over 60.

It would be a shame if Bidenskyyyyyyyyyy’s 87,000 IRS GBCs (Gunslinging Bean Counters) had to buy their own ammo.

“There would be 6,000 fewer audits of wealthy individuals…”

Like the retired grandmother who sells that vintage dining table in her garage fire a few hundred dollars.

The whole agency should be abolished.
Replace all income, capital gains, inheritance taxes with a simple sales tax collected by the States.
Everyone contributes something. No free riders. The more you earn, the more you spend, the more you contribute.
Simple clean and fair. Which is why it will never happen.

$27 billion in lost funding divided by 87K new IRS agents = $230K per agent.

Getting rid of the new IRS agents solves half the problem. And that assumes the average salary is $100K/year, which it's probably more.

Good point. Congress will never, ever give up their primary means of ‘social engineering’— the tax code. Sad, but true.
