Russia is evacuating its military fleet from Syria following an offensive by rebels

Russia has begun withdrawing ships from its naval base in Tartus, Syria, after a rapid advance by Islamist rebel forces that the Syrian army, led by President Bashar al-Assad, is unable to contain, according to Naval News.

On December 2, the tanker "Yelnya," crucial for supporting Russian forces in the Mediterranean, departed Tartus. Other vessels may have left the base along with it. The Russian naval group in Syria consists of five ships and one submarine, including two "Admiral Gorshkov" class frigates, one "Admiral Grigorovich" class frigate, an upgraded "Kilo" class submarine, and two auxiliary vessels.

If Russia decides to retain the base in Tartus, it will need to send substantial reinforcements, but the deployment would take weeks, according to Naval News.

US! Go home!

Works that way too.

Try and be a bit more intelligent in your posts. Islamic fundamentalists are taking over.

If the Russian Navy evacuates Tartus, I don't think they will fight their way back in. They just don't have the capability to project significant force this far from Russia. They will negotiate with the new regime. Both Russia and the US have been killing HTS for quite a while, so neither are any sort of friend.

I think some of these ships are likely to have very short “legs.” The logistics of getting all the way to the Baltic is going to be tough. Also, some of them may not be in sufficient repair to make the trip. This is going to be interesting to watch. I suspect no one along the way is going to want to host them long enough for extensive repairs or refitting. The article didn’t say anything about fuelers or supply ships.

Kurds were the only ones who were able to organize themselves. The Alawites and the Christians are going to be in trouble now that Assad's military is no longer going to protect them.

They had time during the Syrian Civil War to organize themselves into militias. The Kurds never trusted anybody and did that.

I have admittedly not been closely following these events - but isn’t this akin to an ISIS-like group over-running a part of Syria?

That can’t be good, if they gain some part of the military and other infastructure of Syria.

Put Sullivan and Nuland on 24 hour guarded watch. Don’t let them speak or communicate with anyone, unless you want WWIII.
