Move over, Jean Valjean — Luigi Mangione will soon be immortalized on a San Francisco stage in a sickening musical comedy glorifying the alleged UnitedHealthcare CEO gunman. “Luigi the Musical,” slated to debut at the Taylor Street Theater on June 13, promises a “bold, campy and unafraid” take on the life and times of the man accused of perpetrating an assassination that left two young children without a father. Opening night is already sold out on the official website, which uses the tagline “A story of love, murder and hash browns,” a reference to Mangione scarfing down the McDonald’s menu...

Democrats on a Senate subcommittee are accusing UnitedHealthcare Group of denying claims to a growing number of patients as it tried to leverage artificial intelligence to automate the process. In an October report, "How Medicare Advantage Insurers Have Denied Patients Access to Post-Acute Care," Democrats on the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (PSI) released a report claiming UnitedHealthcare’s prior authorization denial rate for post-acute care jumped from 10.9% in 2020 to 22.7% in 2022. Denial rates for skilled nursing centers, in particular, "experienced particularly dramatic growth." The number of denied claims in 2022 was nine times higher compared to...

A GiveSendGo campaign has raised more than $50,000 for the legal defense of 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, who was arrested and charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, as others have been yanked offline after raising thousands of dollars to support the Ivy League graduate. As of Thursday afternoon, the GiveSendGo campaign had raised more than $54,000 of a $200,000 goal. "This is a preemptive legal fundraiser for the suspect allegedly involved in the shooting of the United Healthcare CEO. We are not here to celebrate violence, but we do believe in the constitutional right of fair legal representation,"...

Luigi Nicholas Mangione, the whiz kid Ivy League-educated high school valedictorian accused of the execution-style murder of the CEO of one of the nation's largest healthcare providers, may have spiraled out of control after traumatic back surgery. The procedure, which allegedly left Mangione in significant physical and emotional distress, may have contributed to his deteriorating mental state, a factor authorities are considering as part of their investigation. New York prosecutors have formally accused 26-year-old Mangione, a native of Towson, Maryland, of the fatal shooting of United Healthcare executive Brian Thompson. The incident occurred outside the New York Hilton in midtown...

Brand-new photos have been released showing the face of a suspect who police say was lying in wait before the brazen targeted killing of the CEO of one of the nation's largest healthcare companies in midtown Manhattan. The NYPD released the images late Thursday morning, Dec. 5, just over 24 hours after the homicide. They are the first photos showing the suspect's face. Earlier images the department released were of the man wearing a mask. The new images were taken inside a hostel on Manhattan's Upper West Side, where authorities believe the suspect may have been staying. "This does not...

A new poll in New Hampshire suggests that former President Donald Trump's large double-digit lead over his GOP rivals may be shrinking in the state that holds the first primary and second overall contest in the Republican presidential nominating calendar. According to a University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll released on Tuesday, Trump enjoys the support of 37% of likely Republican presidential primary voters in the Granite State. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis stands at 23%, with the rest of the large field of contenders polling in the single digits. Trump's 14-point lead over DeSantis is down from a 20-point...

A University of New Haven lecturer behind canceling a campus appearance by Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke has come forward to apologize for misrepresenting the popular conservative sheriff. Patrick Malloy, a senior lecturer at the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, issued a statement last week saying he and university officials decided not to finalize the event with Sheriff Clarke because of his political views and extravagant requests for his arrival, which Mr. Malloy admitted he “unintentionally” misrepresented. “I would like to apologize and take responsibility for my actions that have compromised the University of New Haven...

The University of New Hampshire has removed from its website a “bias-free language guide” that warned against using the word “American” because it fails to recognize South America. The guide was developed in 2013 by several advocacy groups whose members are appointed by the university president. It was mentioned in an annual report submitted by at least one of those groups in 2014, but the university said administrators did not know about it until this week, when it was criticized in the media. […] It suggested replacements for common terms, such as “person of material wealth” instead of rich and...

As Portsmouth resident Betty Hill drove her mother home on Route 108 at 8 p.m. Sept. 7, 1977, she saw large red and green lights on what she believed to be a UFO as she neared Trickling Falls in East Kingston. Later as she was driving home, she saw another UFO with red and green lights following railroad tracks near Route 107. Betty Hill's report of a UFO sighting is one of thousands she catalogued during her lifetime after she and her husband, Barney Hill, became known internationally for reporting they had been abducted by aliens in 1961 in New...

DURHAM — The 2009 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebratory Events at the University of New Hampshire will come with a controversial twist — the inclusion of 1960s student radical turned academic Angela Davis who will give the keynote speech. Davis, who was on the FBI’s 10 most wanted list in the 1970s, will speak about the urgent need for prison reform as part of this year’s MLK celelbration theme “One in 100: Dismantling a Prison Nation.”

DURHAM — The cost of attending the University of New Hampshire just went up a minimum of $1,400 a year for some students. It has nothing to do with tuition, the cost of books or anything directly involving the education of students. The increase in cost has to do with a decision by university officials to join a growing number of the nation's land grant universities in requiring health insurance as a condition of enrollment for all full-time students. The new requirement will impact about 15 percent of the university's student population, or about 1,800 students, based on a survey...

UNH petition targets teacherBy Beth LaMontagne blamontagne@seacoastonline.com DURHAM -- Although the University of New Hampshire administration said it stands by Professor William Woodward and his right to share controversial views about the government's role in 9/11, a small group of students have started a petition to remove him. Bill Hunt, a UNH junior, is chairman of the newly formed and unrecognized organization Students for Academic Integrity. "Basically, we watch professors to just ensure they're doing their job ... they're not biased in the classroom and are not teaching what they are not supposed to teach," said Hunt...

Professor William Woodward describes the politics of his youth as "middle of the road." Woodward says he grew up a "mainstream" Protestant in a Republican household. He was not, he said, a born protester. When some Vietnam War opponents in his generation burned their draft cards or fled to Canada, Woodward chose instead to join the Peace Corps. Like President Bush, however, Woodward says his eyes were opened on Sept. 11. "After 2001," he said, "I recognized what I thought was a government conspiracy, and so I became more active in upholding the truth and seeking the truth." A tenured...

From kindergarten through college, returning students may not be coming back to more difficult reading, writing and mathematical tasks, but they will be able to ascend to the next level of sensitivity. But to what avail? Gender-Bending Etiquette For example, students may graduate high school not ready to read at college level but they will know what to say to someone who just had a sex-change operation. “There’s news today that students at Batavia High School in New York will be greeted by administrators, counselors, and psychologists when they return on September 6th for forums and question-and-answer sessions about ‘gender...

University of New Hampshire administrators are standing behind a tenured professor who has publicly theorized that the U.S. government orchestrated the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, even as Gov. John Lynch condemned his remarks. Calling psychology professor William Woodward's theory "completely crazy and offensive," the governor said in a statement yesterday that he plans to address his concerns with the University System of New Hampshire Board of Trustees. "Although academic freedom is important," the governor said, "if the UNH professor is promoting that view, it reflects a reckless disregard for the true facts and raises questions as to why such...

A tenured professor of psychology at the University of New Hampshire believes an "elite" group within the federal government orchestrated the September 11th attacks on America. William Woodward has already raised that possibility in his classroom and later this year hopes to teach a class that would explore Sept. 11th "in psychological terms -- terms like belief, conspiracy, fear, truth, courage, group dynamics." He may not get the chance. Several state leaders yesterday criticized Woodward for bringing the radical theories into the classroom. "In my view, there are limitations to academic freedom and freedom of speech," said U.S. Sen. Judd...
