Luigi Nicholas Mangione, the whiz kid Ivy League-educated high school valedictorian accused of the execution-style murder of the CEO of one of the nation's largest healthcare providers, may have spiraled out of control after traumatic back surgery.
The procedure, which allegedly left Mangione in significant physical and emotional distress, may have contributed to his deteriorating mental state, a factor authorities are considering as part of their investigation.
New York prosecutors have formally accused 26-year-old Mangione, a native of Towson, Maryland, of the fatal shooting of United Healthcare executive Brian Thompson.
The incident occurred outside the New York Hilton in midtown Manhattan early Wednesday morning, Dec. 4.
Mangione was apprehended after a five-day manhunt ay a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania on Monday, Dec. 9.
Details about the surgery or its impact have not been publicly disclosed, but a friend who met Mangione after he moved to Hawaii in 2022, told The New York Times he left the state in the summer of 2023 presumably for an operation on his back.
Mangione ended up “in bed for about a week” with back pain after he did a surf lesson Hawaii, the same friend told CNN.
“My back and hips locked up after the accident,” a user on a now-deleted reddit account with biographical information matching Mangione's wrote in July 2023, saying “intermittent numbness has become constant” and “I’m terrified of the implications," CNN reported.
The same user wrote a few weeks later that he had undergone spinal surgery and detailed past health struggles, including Lyme disease and severe brain fog, which he said "started after losing sleep during his fraternity’s 'hell week' and caused his college grades to start 'tanking,' " according to CNN.
In August of that year, the friend said he texted Mangione to see how he was doing, and Mangione sent back "jarring" photos of scans of his spin, according to the Times. Magione posted the same or a similar image of the scan as a backdrop photo on his X profile shown here - warning: graphic.
After his arrest, Mangione was discovered to have written a three-page manifesto critical of the healthcare industry, with a comment stating, "These parasites had it coming."
Mangione, who holds both Bachelor's and Master's degrees (in computer science and engineering, respectively) from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
He was popular among classmates both at UPenn, and in high school, at the elite private Gilman School in Baltimore, where he played soccer and ran track.
Mangione maintained an active social media presence until about six months ago, when he suddenly went dark.
“Nobody has heard from you in months, and apparently your family is looking for you,” one user posted on X in October, tagging an account belonging to Mangione.
This continues to be a developing story. Check back to Daily Voice for updates.
Was he on psychotropic drugs?
Sounds to me like he spent too many years in the commie re-education camp we call the university system.
Jarring? That’s a plate and is fairly standard in spine surgery for fusing joints.
My question is why. It looks like he got some kind of surgery from the X-rays. Was there some claim denied? If United paid for everything, it doesn’t make much sense. Did his doctor try and fail to get some other procedure or pain management and have it denied?
And why did the moron not post the manifesto? Now the cops have it and will bury it beside John Gotti, like they did with the Nashville tranny mass murderer at the school.
“””may have spiraled out of control after traumatic back surgery”””
This is a very common excuse offered by people who have been arrested for a crime and claim their medical condition caused them to go astray. Check out old squishy gardener videos.

I’ve had serious surgery before...and I’m facing the possibility of a very serious diagnosis in the near future (tests still being done) and I’ve never had the urge to shoot somebody in the back.
High School Valedictorian gigs used to be what they gave to “Hispanic single moms with kids” for showing up in school enough to earn a diploma. It looks like now they are given to “whiz kids” with sore backs who are picked as most likely to succeed in knocking off a medical insurance CEO.
My 30 yo single father son works for a small, well paying outfit that does not qualify for group insurance so they all by their own.
My two grandsons (His sons) live with their welfare single with live in benefits mom so he pays 220.00 a month for a MEDICAL that he was told to wait FOR TWO YEARS, some kind of wait time before fully effective because he needs all his teeth pulled and dentures put in.
He asked up front what would be needed at the two year mark and he saved up to that amount and he has been scheduled for surgery on the 9th and 19th of this month (extraction, insertion of new dentures) . . . .UNTIL YESTERDAY when he was told he needed another 4200.00 that he doesn't have and we are not a wealthy family to help him
I am pissed and my heart is broken.
ALSO:
I have had chronic back pain from a construction accident in 1977 nd have suffered through drugs, alcohol and working through it all until finally reaching retirement, I have an easier lifestyle and only need OTC aspirin for pain . . . . But I can relate to the latest report that this guy has been suffering from a surgery (something I was deathly afraid of because of too many bad reports I'd received over my lifetime).
I'm conflicted and empathetic.
I'm still in pain but it is manageable and my young son working damned hard to get his life happening just got major screwed.
I need to stop here.

Let me see if I got this right. Born to wealth and privilege. Hurts back while surfing in Hawaii. Gets surgery a week later and has complications. Suffers sleep deprivation during hazing at Towson University. Recovers enough to plan execution of CEO. This includes travel and crafting an escape plan including pre-positioning an EBike, which he rides(?! Great work surgeons!) to a secluded area in Central Park. He the flees the state.
Obviously, because of all his disabilities he shouldn’t be held responsible. A victim of life and circumstances.
Pink Floyd almost wrote a song about that, but then decided to go another way.
imo . . . humans are not made to have their backs “repaired” . . . . The best thing is to be careful, which many of us older guys were never taught so . . . . we complain a lot about everything . . . . from a barroom stool
LOL!
Seems to be others fault somehow.
Murders convenient victim.
Feels smug and gets caught.
I feel like we are being led to a narrative that is not exactly the truth here.
Sadly there are many rich elitist youth that think the same way and feel entitled to act on their delusions.
I too have had traumatic back surgery. It did a number on my mental health. I understand his rage. His sense of hopelessness. Thinking that his life is ruined. However as he walked upto murder the CEO of UHG, he wasn’t walking with a lymp.
Total Bull-arkey!.............
In May, the City of Hollywood Firefighters’ Pension Fund filed a lawsuit against Thompson and other UnitedHealth executives, alleging that the CEO hid information about a federal investigation before selling over 31 percent of his shares, earning $15.1 million.
The complaint mentioned that Thompson and other company leaders sold more than $117 million worth of UnitedHealth stock over a four-month period while they were aware of the federal antitrust probe. However, the development has not yet been made public.
In October, the California Public Employees’ Retirement System, the largest public pension fund in the U.S., joined the lawsuit and filed an amended complaint seeking a jury trial against Thompson and other executives.
In February, The Wall Street Journal revealed that federal investigators had been interviewing individuals from the healthcare sector where UnitedHealth operates.
