A longtime surfer and travel guide died after being impaled by a swordfish off the coast of Indonesia. The 36-year-old Italian surfer identified as Giulia Manfrini by her business partner was struck in the chest by the swordfish while surfing west of Sumatra in the Indian Ocean, BBC News reported. Two witnesses are said to have tried to provide first aid to Manfrini, who was later taken to a medical center, the report stated. Swordfish have a long sharp bill, or rostral bone, that can be dangerous to humans but fatalities are extremely rare.

28-year-old surfer Liam Mahoney was arrested on the beach in Belmar, New Jersey on Tuesday, August 20th and was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and obstruction of justice. Videos of the arrest went viral and there was massive public outcry about “beach badge” requirements for surfers at Belmar’s beaches. Beach badges are required for admission to Belmar’s beaches. Honolulu’s emergency services were unable to save Tamayo Perry, 49, after he was attacked by a shark while surfing off the island of Oahu at around 1 p.m. Sunday, according to the BBC. An Australian surfer is presumed dead after he was dragged underwater by a shark in an area known to be frequented by great whites earlier this week, authorities said. Veteran Brazilian surfer Marcio Freire died Thursday while surfing off the coast of Portugal in an area known as Nazaré, which is home to some of the world's biggest and most dangerous waves, according to reports. The Portuguese National Maritime authority said, "A 47-year-old man of Brazilian nationality died this afternoon after suffering a fall while practicing towed surf at Praia do Norte." A 31-year-old male surfer was killed in a shark attack in California on Friday. Eric Endersby, the harbor director for the city of Morro Bay, confirmed to The Hill on Saturday that the man, whose identity has not been released, was located by officials at 10:48 a.m. Pacific time off of the Morro Bay State Park beach, which is just north of Morro Rock. While Australian surfer Mick Fanning fought for his life against a shark in South African waters, his mum watched the terrifying moment back at home on live television. Fanning emerged unscathed after fighting off the shark which attacked him while he waited for his first wave in the final of the World Surf League (WSL) event at Jeffreys Bay. This is the frightening moment a three-metre Great White started trailing a surfer back to shore, just two weeks before another man lost his arm and hand in a nearby shark attack. "Most shark attacks in California are caused by great whites. There's no other species that regularly occurs off of California that could inflict that kind of injury," said Andrew Nosal, a marine biologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla.
