When Cardinal Bergoglio was elected pope in 2013, many traditional Catholics were wary. Recently, their pessimism is being justified as "The Francis Effect" makes itself felt across the world and in America, most notably in the Archdiocese of New York. So-called "traditional" Catholics prefer to attend the Mass as it was celebrated before and during the Second Vatican Council (1962-5), before the liturgy was radically reformed in 1969. The Tridentine Mass, which was the ordinary form of the Mass from 1570-1969, is said in Latin, often accompanied by Gregorian Chant and incense, and emphasizes the sacrificial aspect of the Mass.

As the Rev. Justin Wylie took the pulpit at the Church of the Holy Innocents in Manhattan last month, anger and anxiety emanated from the pews. The church is the only one in New York City to offer a daily traditional Latin Mass, but an archdiocesan panel had recommended that it be closed. Father Wylie, a visiting priest, urged parishioners to be obedient but also to speak up, as traditionalist Catholics, for a place in the church, saying they should not be “turned out like squatters.”

All of us who are traditional Catholics feel strongly about what is happening in the Catholic Church. What I mean is the strong progressive, modernist agenda of telling us to be silent about the intrinsic evil of abortion, homosexual activity, birth control, divorce and modesty. If you go to Rome, you can visit the Piccolo Museo del Purgatorio. Google it and look at some more of the very interesting pictures. People have come back from purgatory to burn their hand prints into prayer books, and clothing. Talk about proof of the fire of purgatory. Yet most people do nothing for the souls of our loved ones suffering there. So today we had a Holy Latin Requiem Mass for All Souls.

From the Bible we can see that the devil is real and active. Personally, I do not think that there is any other place where the spiritual battle is so intense and extreme, as when it comes to restoring Catholic Tradition. As we read in scripture about the devil asking Jesus to adore him, we know that the devil wants all of us to adore him instead of Jesus. My wife and I went to the Tridentine Mass at Immaculate Conception Church(Sleepy Hollow, NY). It has been a very long time since a Mass brought us to tears.
