Four years ago, the BBC decided to capitalize on the immense popularity of the long-running Doctor Who series by creating a spin-off called Torchwood. Whereas Doctor Who is, apart from the intensity of its stories, safe for the whole family, producers said that Torchwood would be “dark, clever, wild, [and] sexy.” "Doctor Who for adults” is what they called it. As a colleague wrote at the time, a better word to describe the show is “nihilistic” - it’s a judgment that’s reinforced by the show’s newest character. While Torchwood is certainly dark, it’s rarely, if ever, been all that “clever,”...

This may be just a vanity post, but I'm really kinda pissed off at Russell T. Davies' portrayal of the US Tea Party in the Torchwood Season 4 series. This season, the series takes place in the US, and is about a conspiracy that prevents everyone in the world from dying. As usual, the series makes (IMHO) good comments on what would happen to society if such an event were to occur. RTD picked some really good US actors for the new roles, and their skill pushes the story along. However, the story now "feels" more like an American drama than...

A casting call sheet for the fourth series of Torchwood has apparently been leaked. The sheet says filming on the ten episode series will begin January 12th 2011. It then reveals details on three key new characters, one of which will be a regular cast member. Character descriptions below. REX MATHEON, CAUCASIAN, Late 20s, CIA agent, a fast-tracked high-flyer. And he knows it! Rex is fast, sharp, smart, clever, and when the situation demands it, ruthless. He’s got a lethal sense of humour – he doesn’t care if he makes enemies, he’s too busy enjoying himself. But when Rex’s life...

If you watched Torchwood's last season, the Children of Earth miniseries, it felt a lot like the end of the whole thing. Well, that may not be the case, TV Guide reported (mild spoilers ahead): Torchwood might not have concluded its run at the end of the thrilling miniseries Children of Earth after all—Ianto's tragic death not withstanding. The new year could bring some "very good news" for fans of the sexy sci-fi series, creator Russell T. Davies tells TV Guide Magazine. "The recession has hit British television, but fingers crossed, it will be a go. We expect things to...

think I’ve found the most pro-American show on television. True to form, its not produced in Hollywood. Growing up, I was obsessed with “Dr. Who.” In the seventh grade I wore a Tom Baker style scarf to school every day (Baker and Davidson are my favorite “Doctors,” if you understand what that means, feel free to have it at in the comments). I thoroughly enjoy the “reboot” that currently airs on the SyFy channel and recently stumbled across its spin-off “Torchwood.”
