Torchwood (BBC) Portrayal of US Tea Party
None | 8/8/2011 | Me

This may be just a vanity post, but I'm really kinda pissed off at Russell T. Davies' portrayal of the US Tea Party in the Torchwood Season 4 series.

This season, the series takes place in the US, and is about a conspiracy that prevents everyone in the world from dying. As usual, the series makes (IMHO) good comments on what would happen to society if such an event were to occur. RTD picked some really good US actors for the new roles, and their skill pushes the story along. However, the story now "feels" more like an American drama than a Welsh one, which is what I liked about Torchwood.

What I hate is his portrayal of the Tea Party as bigoted, Christian-extremist, xenophobic, homophobic, puritanical, white racists. The "leader" of the Tea Party (we all know in real life there is no clear leader) is a prudish, power-hungry, uncaring, anti-poor, church lady sterotype. She wants to put the sick and injured (remember they can't die) into asylums away from rest of society, and build a new "heaven" on earth.

This sub-story disgusts me and is so far away from what the Tea Party represents, I wonder: Is this what RTD believes the Tea Party is, based on input from the leftist US Big Media Or is RTD just doing his part for the liberal smear campaign against those who want responsible government? Your thoughts?

Also, if this has been discussed in a sci-fi thread already, just post the URL. I didn't see it a search.

Thanks for the heads-up. I loved Children Of Earth, one of the greatest Torch’s I’ve ever seen, and one of the best sci-fi series I ever saw, but I watched the first two American Torchwoods and was bored out of my mind, so I stopped watching it. Now I know I didn’t miss anythjing.

I used to love that show, but after this season’s blatant gay scenes and anti-American statements, I had to stop watching. The British have no room to moralize, when their own cities are burning and being taken over by Sharia law.

I actually liked the first 2 episodes this season. The next 2 sucked and this last one was OK.

Russell Davies is a gay, anti-religio, liberal hack is the reason it sucks. Also Russell moved to the US.

Musicians in many of England’s 60s big pop groups (and some of their 80s cult stars) are being considered “xenophobic” these days for griping about the open immigration standards in the UK now (what with foreign language signs and no go zones).

Much safer to slam the “yanks” for being “a bit off”.

The same tea party protests of hundreds of years ago cast off the yoke of the English crown. People want freedom and liberty. Choke on it, British euro-globalist socialists.

Even George Orwell realized that socialists were screwy when they defended Stalinism.

How can you really be shocked by this?

The UK called our Congress a bunch of ‘nutters’.

Their own Country is rife with Sharia Law, and contempt of anyone or anything that doesn’t “conform” to the new ‘standards’. I’d tell you to email a protest, but it wouldn’t do any good, and they’d only send you a scathing reply informing you of what a good laugh they had.

The English have turned into nothing more than pudding.

British movies and TV, as a whole, are horrible. If you think that Hollywood is PC, let me tell you that they have nothing on the British. British film and TV makes Hollywood look like the John Birch Society. It’s disgusting. What’s really disturbing is how quickly they changed. I remember back in the 80s, the British used to make fun of American movies for how trashy they were (and they had a point). Now, they out-trash Hollywood by a wide margin.

I’ve never finished episode one of season one.

Is this a typical trait of this show?

Yeah, Torch was one of the most pro-homo series on TV.

So you didn’t have a problem with the gay kissing, but do have a problem with how they portray the Tea Party?

I liked Dr. Jack’s character in Dr. Who when they first introduced him, they toned down the “gay” aspect, but Torchwood was over the top from the getgo, so even though I think it was a well written show, we quit watching once they started pushing the heavily gay agenda.

I liked the sci-fi “X-files” aspect of the show, but I cringed at all the gay lifestyle stuff. I agree it is over the top to the point of interfering with the story. And you REALLY want to stay away this season (4)! Season 3, Children of Earth, was really good, and short.

It’s not Daleks or any other SciFi beastie out of the Dr. Who and Torchwood menagerie that has London in flames today. It’s the moral and ethical social attitudes that the modern Dr. Who and Torchwood shows present as goods.

They are time-delayed poisons wrapped up in candy. Well, the time-delay has run out and the poisons have their impact now.

The show’s supergayness caused me to switch it off permanently. It was interesting- up to the point the main character started french kissing his butt naked bartender butt buddy.

The show should be renamed Butt Naked Bartender Butt Buddies.
