I live in an area where DSL is not yet available, and have been here three years and still stuck on dial-up. I do not know when DSL will ever be available and have been considering satellite access through HughesNet. What I wanted to know is does anyone out there have HughesNet, and if they do are they happy with it and would recommend it. I would also like to know the pros and cons if possible and any personal opinions. Thanks.

I've got a problem with my home computer and I was wondering if someone could help me? My system is: AMD Anthlon Processor 1.24GHz, 384MB of RAM Windows XP Prof with SP2 Cox Cable (ISP) Everything was working fine until about a week ago. And it only happens when I start a browser (Internet Explorer and Firefox), but my system will hang and lock up while web pages load and it takes forever for them to load up, worse than if I had dial up. My curser will also disappear for a while and if I try to toggle between...

I have a wireless router and wired router. The wireless router has a problem with the LAN wired ports, they don't work, but the WAN does. What I would like to do is plug in the wireless router into the wired router, then to the Internet. I have 2 computers that use wired, 2 wireless. I know this can be done, but I don't know the proper settings for the wireless to work through the wired out to the Internet. Right now I do it the old fashioned way, plug in the one I need for the time being, and...

OK, I am a very technical person. I have installed Operating Systems but they were Minaframes (OS/390 and UNIX). I have a old laptop (Compaq Armada 500) that I want to install Linux on (upon which I wish to install Linux?). But I have been out of the OS biz for a while, so can someone get me started? I am concerned about things like coordinating the BIOS with the OS, getting the proper drivers (especially wifi), etc. etc. etc. Any first steps would be greatly appreciated.

I have a fried CD-RW. I don't know how it got that way (died all of a sudden). So, in the meantime, I'm borrowing an external Yamaha and have it hooked up--as I can't afford to replace the CD-drive. Question 1: I'm running Suse 10.0 Eval, first updated KDE to 3.5.1 and then updated the kernel to 2.6.16-default. Since the kernel upgrade, I cannot get any USB devices to start. I've tried editing /etc/fstab as recommended, but the devices won't mount--and if they do, nothing shows up in Konqueror. I did however, and only once, did Question 2: How can...

I have dial-up and just changed ISP and added web accelerator. Now graphics on FR are not displaying properly. Profile flags are not waving, PJ Comix's beaver is frozen and the over the top FReepathon banner is not showing the fireworks it normally shows. Was hoping you could advise or point me to someone who can. Thanks in advance. Regards, Lobo

Today a new ping list is starting on FreeRepublic, called TechSupport it will be a place for Freepers to get some help on problems that ight arise on their computers. Why a list for this: Some of the freepers who run or are involved in technical ping list find themselves with a good deal of mail from people asing about problems that many freepers might be able to and have more time to help with. I have spoken to a few people who either run list or are involved on them and they fell this would accomplish three things. Firstly...
