RICHMOND — Virginia lawmakers yesterday proposed a mandate for state sheriffs and jail wardens to initiate deportation proceedings for illegal aliens. The proposal was one of several made by a State Crime Commission task force trying to crack down on illegal immigration. Right now, police and jail officials must wait for federal immigration agents to decide whether to take custody of a suspect. Task force members also recommended that Virginia adopt a uniform, statewide policy on dealing with illegal aliens but said they need a better understanding of federal law, costs and immigration statistics before making a final decision. "What...

Kenneth Stolle, R-Virginia Beach, wants to add drinking and hunting to that list. Since it's already illegal in the commonwealth to hunt while under the influence of alcohol or drugs , Stolle's bill (SB 1149) -- which the state Senate passed unanimously -- would set the blood alcohol limit for hunters (.02) even lower than it now is for drivers (.08). Who'd have a problem with that? The Newington-based Virginia Citizens Defense League apparently does. VCDL...

During his 11 years with the Virginia Beach P olice D epartment, Officer Ken Stolle stepped into his share of domestic disturbances. Although he’s retired from the force now, that background comes in handy for Sen. Kenneth W. Stolle, R-Virginia Beach. “When you’re a police officer, you’re a problem-solver,” said Stolle, a Republican senator since 1992. “When I’d go into a domestic violence situation and suggest to them that they should not resort to violence, it was oftentimes a wasted gesture. One way or another, I’ve got to separate those two people so that we can resolve the problem. “The...
