Visitors to Yosemite National Park got more than they expected when a rockslide came off the east side of El Capitan on Monday, originating very close to the park’s famous firefall. The tail end of the incident —– which happened at about 11:45 a.m. — was captured on video by photographer James Piper. In the video, the sound of crashing rocks can be heard echoing across the valley as smoke, debris and dust fill the air at the base of the iconic El Capitan. "Holy God," a man in the background can be heard saying. Link to video: https://twitter.com/i/status/1627900010909306882

A part of a mountain in Tlalnepantla, located on the outskirts of Mexico City, gave way on Friday, September 10, 2021, sending huge boulders -- some of them the size of small homes -- into a densely populated area, and leaving at least 1 person dead and 10 missing. The landslide followed days of heavy rain in central Mexico and M7.0 earthquake on September 7 in Acapulco1. Mexico state Gov. Alfredo del Mazo said Friday night that both factors likely contributed to the slide. Residents immediately started search and rescue operations and continued until the night when authorities pulled them...

DOLORES, Colo. (KKTV) - Boulders weighing a combined 10 million pounds destroyed a stretch of highway in southwestern Colorado and have left road crews with a daunting cleanup job. "It’s truly mind-boggling that something that big came down," said Mike McVaugh, CDOT Regional Transportation director for southwest Colorado. McVaugh spoke with 11 News sister station CBS Denver about the job ahead. The massive boulders were part of a rockslide Friday afternoon that rendered part of Highway 145 impassable. The slide left behind an 8-foot-deep trench where pavement once was. According to CDOT, the trench was caused by the biggest boulder...

VLADIMIR Putin has drafted in soldiers to investigate a “collapsed mountain” in a remote region of Siberia amid suggestions it may have been caused by a UFO crash-landing. Whatever the cause, the event resulted in a massive rockfall which has blocked the nearby Bureya river, and left several villages at risk of flooding. So much rock was shifted it would fill 13,600 Olympic-sized swimming pools, say experts. Meanwhile, the falling 34 million cubic metres of debris left a gash in a mountain which could swallow up all the water used if every American showered at the same time. A defence...

Photo courtesy of the Colorado DOT UPDATE: Thursday, Feb. 18, 3:30 p.m. Central: I-70 through Glenwood Canyon is likely to remain closed at least until Saturday, CDOT says, as inclement weather has created delays in crews’ progress bringing additional rocks down onto the highway and restoring safety. The opening time and day will be dependent on CDOT’s ability to complete mitigation and clear the roadway with the current weather conditions. SAN FRANCISCO A bridge is being built around a rock slide that closed a main route to Yosemite National Park and disrupted business and life in the area, state transportation officials announced Thursday. The company chosen for the project, Teichert Construction, has started moving equipment and bridge parts to Highway 140, which has been blocked since April 29 by 3 million cubic yards of rock and debris. Construction can't begin until the California Department of Transportation gets all the permits needed to move through the Merced River and build on federal forest service land, but officials hope the project will...

GLENWOOD SPRINGS - Full repair and cleanup following the rockslide on I-70 on Thanksgiving day could take weeks, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. Huge boulders crashed down onto I-70 in Glenwood Canyon Thursday morning. " It is estimated that around one half dozen boulders are embedded between six and eight feet into the roadway," says Stacy Stegman, CDOT Spokesperson. "Additionally, two retaining wall panels along the westbound lanes have been completely knocked out. Other roadway and guardrail damage has also occurred." Crews are working through the night to open one lane each direction by Friday morning. Structural engineers...
