Multiple people are feared dead after a horrific rockslide at Canada's Banff National Park was triggered while up to 20 hikers were nearby
One person has been confirmed dead so far as rescuers continue to search for survivors at the site of the rockfall near Bow Glacier Falls, north of Lake Louise.
The deadly landslide took place at around 1:30pm on Thursday and 'multiple hikers' were caught in it, said the Lake Louise Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
An initial joint statement by RCMP and Parks Canada confirmed one person died at the scene, and three others were evacuated to the hospital. Their conditions have not been shared at this time.
In a statement released Friday morning, the two agencies did not share the name of the person who died as RCMP is 'working to notify next of kin.'
The Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service (STARS) dispatched two helicopters and transported each patient one by one to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary yesterday.
Video posted online of the incident showed a large shelf of stone rocketing down a mountainside, which then caused a huge cloud of gray dust to rise into the air.
One photo taken by a hiker nearby showed the debris cloud billowing up. At least one person could be seen frighteningly close to the devastating scene.
Niclas Brundell told CBC News he was hiking in the area with his wife when the rockfall happened. He estimated that the rockfall was 160 feet wide and 30 feet deep.

I was near there in ‘91.
LOTS of geological evidence for past landslides.
Praying for the victims and their families.
This is bad. Unfortunately, there are going to be more deaths reported as they dig out.
As we all are.
They may never be able to dig them all out. Some of the victims of the 1959 Hebgen Lake landslide in Montana are still under the debris.
I had never heard of this 1959 quake. It was really bad.
Jacqueline Wilson!!
It was. I learned a bit about it when I visited the area in 1985.
I’ve been to Banff a couple of times for conferences and drove up to see Lake Louise. I did a little hiking in one of the national parks but it was south of Lake Louise and in British Columbia, so I don’t think it was an area at risk for rockslides.
Oy vey! One of my colleagues is there right now. No word so far.
