Seven US civilians carrying firearms on a private plane were arrested in Dubai last week after trying to enter Afghanistan during the US evacuation, a report said. The would-be vigilantes wanted to assist the deadly military-led evacuation efforts from Kabul’s airport, before they were caught with firearms by United Arab Emirates officials on August 31, the last day of the pullout, according to Newsweek. “The passengers reportedly planned to assist Afghanistan evacuation efforts but had no approved onward travels plans,” a State Department cable obtained by the magazine reportedly read. The US Consulate General in Dubai was reportedly “engaging with...

FAIRFIELD, Idaho — Great Pyrenees dogs that are working to protect flocks of sheep in the southern Idaho wilderness keep getting “rescued” by people who think the dogs are lost. Flat Top sheep rancher Cory Peavey is frustrated because he is spending a lot of time picking up his expensive dogs that he uses to protect his herd from shelters or people’s homes. There are many sheep ranchers in Idaho, and many use Great Pyrenees dogs, something that might look out of the ordinary in the woods to someone camping. Peavy understands that it might be strange to see a...

A Broomfield [Colorado]man who was rescued from his submerged car during the September floods has filed papers indicating he might sue his rescuers and first responders. Roy Ortiz was rescued by North Metro Fire Rescue District and others who responded to the scene after his car was washed off the road on Sept. 12. He says crews took too long to respond to the accident after he became trapped in his upside-down car near the intersection of U.S. 287 and Dillon Road in Lafayette. He also claims the road should have been closed, thus the accident that left him trapped...

When a fully clothed, apparently suicidal man walked into the San Francisco Bay from Shoreline Drive, in Alamdea County, all the would-be rescuers could do was watch. For about an hour. Why their boots stayed dry is a matter of debate Wednesday, the day after 57-year-old Raymond Zack was pronounced dead at an Alameda County hospital. The water's depth and temperature may have played a role. As did budget cuts. The Alameda Fire Department's water rescue program was discontinued in 2009 because of budget cuts. "(The) Alameda Fire Department does not currently have, and is not certified, in land-based water...

One of them, Norman Kember, 74, a retired physics...

In the bedroom of a dingy apartment on Tucson's South Side, Air Force Master Sgt. Jim Johnston snapped on a pair of latex gloves and gently probed the rib cage of a 40-year-old woman weeping with pain. She'd been sick for days. Her fever was 104. Her only medicine: Nyquil. "Where does it hurt?," Johnston asked. "My chest," the woman panted, crying out as a coughing spasm overtook her. An hour later, Johnston is on another city street, trying to make sense of a babbling 21-year-old woman who seems strung out ---

JACKSON, Miss. (AFPN) -- When Senior Master Sgt. James Sanchez goes on a rescue mission here, he makes sure the basic tools of the trade are in order -- a secure hoist, communication equipment, ear protection, water, dog biscuits and a can of cat treats. To him, no one gets left behind. "It's hard to turn away an animal that is going to die … if you don't get them out," said Sergeant Sanchez, a pararescueman with Air Force Reserve Command's 306th Rescue Squadron at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz. "If they come to me, I take them. If they...

Authorities in Belgium launched a rescue operation after a couple were spotted 'struggling' in the sea - only to find they were making love. The alert was raised after a man from De Panne spotted the couple with his binoculars and contacted the coastguard, reports Het Nieuwsblad. A Sea King rescue helicopter from a military base in Koksijde, a lifeboat and local police officers were all drafted in to help the couple. But when the two swimmers were finally 'rescued' they complained there was nothing wrong with them and they had never been in any danger. The 23-year-old girl, from...

Bernard Kerik, former NYPD Commissioner, said it best when he told the 9/11 Commission that “no perfect radio exists” and “God help New York” if it should get attacked a third time. Most importantly, he cautioned that we must “remain preemptive,” because if we think we are safe from terrorism, and that our war is almost over, then we are sadly mistaken.

Thanksgiving is more than just a word or a holiday for Mischelle Hileman and her family. Mischelle and her parents, Jan and Benny Hileman, who all live in rural Lostine, weren't sure last week if they'll be eating turkey or pizza on Thanksgiving Day, but they did know they would be together and it wouldn't be in a hospital. "Last year they chopped my legs off on Thanksgiving eve," said Mischelle, not a person to mince words or evade the truth. All of Wallowa County knows the basic story of how Hileman miraculously survived a week in a rugged deep...
