This May 6, 2001 segment is the one where Russert plays the 1971 clip of Kerry saying: Yes, I committed the same kind of atrocities as thousands of other soldiers have committed in that I took part in shootings in free fire zones. I conducted harassment and interdiction fire. I used 50 calibre machine guns, which we were granted and ordered to use, which were our only weapon against people. I took part in search and destroy missions, in the burning of villages. All of this is contrary to the laws of warfare, all of this is contrary to the...

Request Denied Friday January 23, 1:57 am ET Jonathan Groner, Legal Times Law.com It's been almost five years since the demise of the law that empowered Kenneth Starr and almost 20 other independent counsel to probe allegations of government misconduct. But to the former Clinton administration officials and other figures from that era's scandals who were targeted under it, the law remains very much alive. The special three-judge panel overseeing the statute is still ruling on requests by those caught up in IC probes who are seeking government reimbursement of their legal fees. And it is taking a consistently hard...

Fellow Freepers, A dear friend and colleague of mine was admitted to critical care this morning with heart trouble. I don't have all the details yet and am hoping to find out more soon. Jeanne is a wonderful lady in every respect. She's a happily-married, loving mom with three bright and wonderful kids. She's a joy to work with, and just about the best kind of folk you could ever hope to know. On top of that, she is a woman of profound faith whose trust in the Good Lord helped bring me back to His path. Please say a...

Thursday (Jan 22) I see an OB oncologist for a 5" mass found on my right ovary in an ultrasound I underwent to determine the cause of a persistent sharp abdominal pain. I've had a Ca-something blood test (to reveal the presence of cancer?) that I don't know the results of, but my exam with the OB oncologist will start the ball rolling on what the cause of the mass is. Cancer? I don't know, but it's suspected. Family history has mother and grandmother with ovarian cancer. I'm very scared and dread this appointment, full knowing that finding the truth...

Hello, my FRiends, You have been such a wonderful fellowship of friends, and have generously offered your prayers for people in need. A very dear friend of mine and his wife need your most loving and powerful prayers during this Christmas season. Dave has been in ICU for 16 days now, felled with pneumonia that has been unresponsive - doctors have been unable to grow a culture. (They are thinking it may be viral.) He has been intubated, and had unfortunately pulled it out twice. Been on a variety of very heavy drugs while in ICU. So, the doctors did...

Hello, my FRiends! I'm writing from an internet cafe in an undisclosed location, and have an urgent prayer request. A very nice couple I met on a shuttle bus have a daughter in Michigan near Detroit (they're in FL now) who is undergong treatment for uterine sarcoma. It is nasty. I had a small percentage risk of having it prior to my hysterectomy in March, but thankfully didn't have it. She does. She has had the surgery, but it spread to her lymph nodes. She is young, with two children, 5 and 11. She will be undergoing chemo - five...

Gov. Gray Davis' administration has denied a request by The Bee for information detailing the effects of state budget cuts on public services.

The files could include information on how Californians would feel the impact of spending cuts in a vast array of state programs, including fewer offices, reduced hours and curtailed services.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democrats and some Republicans are hoping to rewrite President Bush's $87 billion package for Iraq and Afghanistan, but top GOP senators are supporting only a few changes in the White House request. The Senate Appropriations Committee planned votes Tuesday on its version of the legislation, with a showdown afterward in the full Senate. The bill, written by panel Chairman Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, mostly follows Bush's proposal but would forbid using the money to repay deposed President Saddam Hussein's foreign debt and limit some flexibility for spending the funds that Bush sought. The committee's top Democrat, Sen. Robert...

I received a letter from the Traditional Values Coalition today regarding a lawsuit being waged against NAMBLA in an effort to take them down. Naturally, it looks like the ACLU has decided to take the side of NAMBLA against a lady who apparently had her little boy taken from her and the rest of the living by a NAMBLA member. Does anyone have information as to the validity of this organization, as I'd like to "help" but never having heard ot Traditional Values Coalition, I'm skeptical. There's nothing worse than giving my hard-earned money to a corrupt and debunked organization....

Hello, my FRiends, I just got a call from a dear friend of mine whose mother-in-law, Carol, is gravely ill in Colorado Springs. My friend's husband and his brother are there now, and she asked me to post this prayer request. Carol recently underwent surgery for a brain tumor, and is in very critical condition - they fear that she has suffered a stroke as well. Please remember them in your prayers, for Carol's healing and for her family's comfort and peace. Thank you, and God bless.

Hi folks! On March 5, I fell at my apartment and tore my rotator cuff in my right shoulder. The landlord never extended the awning over the steps and we had freezing rain overnight, and when I stepped out the door I could not stop in time and went down a flight of stairs, 4 steps. I tried to go through therapy and a cortizone shot, but the doctor felt there was zero progress, and tomorrow I am slated for surgery about 11AM or so EST.

North Korea makes surprise request for direct negotiations with South By David Usborne in New York 21 April 2003 The stand-off with North Korea over its alleged nuclear weapons ambitions took another unexpected turn yesterday when the regime of Kim Jong Il proposed holding direct talks with South Korea later this month. Officials from the North made the request in a telephone call to counterparts from the South at the border village of Panmunjom. They asked for cabinet-level talks between the two Koreas in Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, from 27 to 29 April. The approach came just one day...

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - With U.S. ships filled with tanks and other armor awaiting orders in the Mediterranean, the United States failed again Wednesday to secure Turkish support to deploy U.S. forces needed for a northern front against Iraq.

In Brussels, Belgium, NATO approved the urgent deployment of AWACS radar aircraft, Patriot missiles and chemical-biological response units to protect Turkey. NATO also ordered experts to report on how the alliance could assist Turkish civilians if there were an Iraqi attack, such as by repairing damaged water and power networks.

My nifty new MacAfee firewall says I was just "port probed" and traces it back to IP address 64.29.223.109 at datareturn.com, with Kai Schlichting 342 E. Jericho Tpke. 187, Mineola NY 11501, kai-datareturn.net-trap@conti.nu. I have reported it to abuse@dataretun.com, but that seems to be the company that did the probe. Is there any government (gak) agency I can report the attempted break in to?

I recieved an e-mail from Vets_Husband_and_Wife this morning. She needs our prayers.Vets_Husband_and_Wife is a victim of Tainted Blood, thanks to Bill Clinton's prison blood sales while he was Governor of Arkansas.*Here is part of that e-mail:"But I'm home now. I went in on the 19th, and my doctor let me go on the 22nd. I've been on antibiotics since the 19th (by IV for four days..and 7 days at home on two others).
