[history]
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - With U.S. ships filled with tanks and other armor awaiting orders in the Mediterranean, the United States failed again Wednesday to secure Turkish support to deploy U.S. forces needed for a northern front against Iraq.
In Brussels, Belgium, NATO approved the urgent deployment of AWACS radar aircraft, Patriot missiles and chemical-biological response units to protect Turkey. NATO also ordered experts to report on how the alliance could assist Turkish civilians if there were an Iraqi attack, such as by repairing damaged water and power networks.

We're gonna do a little "nation building."
We'll start with Kurdistan and see how the Turks like it.
To: billorites
Kurdistan.. another can of worms. Boy, did the old colonial powers screw up the middle east or what?

Turkey is trying to become the new France. Too bad. We'd been good friends.

Saving our ass what? Son, we're already dead. We've died 15 times. This is our 16th state. Our last state lasted 600 years and encompassed territory from Austria/Hungary to the Arabian Sea To Morrocco.
We've got a nice piece of property for sale they call northern Irak. Figger it won't go cheap :^D

Maybe we should clear ALL our troops out of Turkey! Adding Turkey to the list make a gang of four.

Looks like we are going to be going it alone without you. AND very soon it will be too late to change minds. Such is life. It was worth a shot trying to include the Turks... but in the end, the relationship is just not there between an Islamic nation, and those perceived as "infidels".
Sorry things did not work out. I fear things will do little but deteriorate from this point on... and that is not good. Your religious leadership has taken over from the military... I suspect there will be a price to pay as the two sides square off in YOUR country. the question: Will Turkey become a religiously governend nation complete with the accountrements of "sharia law" eventually, or will it continue in its march towards repudiation of extremist religions?
At least that is how we will perceive it in the West.
I expect bloodshed and turmoil in Turkey over this issue.
Sad to see it... but NO one can serve two masters. Not even great nations. Be well...

You too Brutus?
There is sympathy for your predicament among our people.. Perhaps a bit more than the sympathy your nation afforded us during our years of terror.
I wouldn't get caught up in the haste of the moment. Either way we win:
1- We come to an understanding, which makes us THE nation with most respect in the middle east for not having bowed to you - the great satan (/sarc), or
2- The Islamists piss you off, the economy takes a big hit, the people never vote for islamists again..
It's a win win. I have no worries.
Stay well..

No, doesn't fit except on foreign policy. Anyone who knows real military history knows enough to fear Turkish soldiers operating at night. And Turkey is not a surrendery-monkey. It's a genetic thing.
Dammit, why don't you guys just take the money? It's more than anyone else is going to get.
To: George W. Bush
Pretty sure it's about us guaranteeing the security of northern Irak until there is a decent government in Irak.

You know, if things work out right here, we could end up with a few militant islamic govts going bump in the night in the not too distant future... From Syria to Afghanistan .. Now that would be worth a Nobel for President Bush, a man with a vision and a country behind him...

Now that would be worth a Nobel for President Bush, a man with a vision and a country behind him...
Bush is Republican and somewhat conservative so therfore he could not win the Nobel Prize even if he brought peace and happniness throughout the Middle East, solved global hunger, and cured AIDS singlehanded. Not going to happen.
To: George W. Bush
LOL.. Good points! Oh,well.
