A Republican group whose officials include Former President Gerald Ford and Vice Presdiential 2nd Daughter Mary Cheney demanded on Wednesday that Senator Rick Santorum of Pennslyvania apologize to gays for this remarks the New York Times reports.

Thanks for choosing this issue to yarp about, Jerry, rather than something truly threatening to our national welfare, like Dem filibusters of judicial candidates.
I like Jerry Ford usually, but he needs to just go back to the golf course and leave politics alone on this one.

It doesn't matter whether Santorum caves or not. The fact is, he's a Senator, and not a judge. Here are the simple facts of this case.
1) This is the the specific law before the US Supreme Court:
Sec. 21.06. Homosexual Conduct.
(a) A person commits an offense if he engages in deviate sexual intercourse with another individual of the same sex.
(b) An offense under this section is a Class C misdemeanor.
2) This is the first section of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution (the money quote is in the curlies):
Amendment XIV
Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; ~~~~nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.~~~~
3) Therefore, the Texas law is a violation of this clause of the United States Constitution, and therefore must be struck down. You may disagree with the 14th amendment, but I don't think the amendment can be seen any other way. And it is clearly the law of the land.

I don't see Santorum caving.. I do. He will apologize for his words "if anyone was offended by them."
Why he got off into a discussion of homosexuality is beyond me. This "man-on-dog" and "man-on-child" stuff was bizarre.
Allowing himself to be labeled a "gay basher" may help him with the base, but it scares the hell out of moderates that the GOP needs.
Everybody knows that Republicans don't favor homosexual acts. Santorum came very close to leaving the impression that Republicans don't like gays (some don't, but most just want the subject dropped).
