Toyota is showing its redesigned three- and five-door Yaris subcompacts at Frankfurt--which is actually news for America, because the three-door and a sedan will go on sale in the U.S. next spring as 2007 models, replacing the goofy Echo. The U.S. version of the Yaris is powered by a 106-hp 1.5-liter in-line four-cylinder engine that makes 103 lb-ft of torque and is mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. The Yaris has an independent MacPherson strut front suspension and a rudimentary torsion beam rear end. The Yaris's base price will be low because features such as...

PARIS (AFX) - Renault SA chief executive is considering taking advantage of the weak valuation of either Ford Motor Co or General Motors Corp to agree an alliance, French weekly business magazine Challenges reported. But a Renault spokesman said no such project exists and that the group is not considering any partnerships involving acquisitions. Without naming its source, the magazine said in an article to be published tomorrow that Ghosn had originally targeted DaimlerChrysler AG, but was attracted by the weak relative capitalisation of the US groups, compared to Renault or its Nissan Motor Co affiliate. The magazine cited Ghosn...

strange thing happened when French auto maker Renault last fall rolled out the no-frills Logan, a midsize sedan was designed to sell for as little as 5,000 euros ($6,000) in emerging markets like Poland. Western buyers clamored for the car. So this June, Renault began delivering the roomy, unpretentious five-seater to France, Germany, and Spain. The pricier West European version includes a passenger-side airbag and a three-year warranty but still sells for a base price of $9,300 -- about half that of the Ford Focus ($17,250) and the Volkswagen Golf ($18,264). Building cheap cars for the West wasn't what Chairman...

French carmaker Renault is to build its Megane saloon model in Iran from 2006. The firm's joint venture with Iran's Industrial Development and Renovation Organisation and two leading carmakers will make about 15,000 Meganes a year. The car is the second to be introduced by Renault to Iran following the Logan, a stripped-down version of the Clio Supermini, also due for a 2006 release. The venture is 51% owned by Renault, despite a law passed this year banning foreign firms from majority ownership. The law, passed in September 2004, imposed a retroactive 20 March cut-off point. Renault signed its deal...

Okay, know going in that this story is going to cause your brain to curdle. You've got French technology, French manufacturing, and a French driver all going wildly, terribly wrong. On top of that you have a not-ready-for-prime-time Google translation from German to English. It's going to be a rough ride, but once you get into the spirit of the thing it just sort of skips along. To set the scene: You have a cutting-edge French car with "smart" technology that takes so many little, irritating tasks away from the driver. You know, little things like air conditioningl, seat adjustment,...

TEHRAN (PIN) — French carmaker Renault has inaugurated its new Tehran headquarters in a bid to establish itself as a major player in Iran's fast-growing automobile market, its chairman said. "L-90 project is not only a license for car production. It is a joint venture deal for transfer of technology to Iran," Louis Schweitzer told Iran's Minister of Industries and Mines Es'haq Jahangiri. "Iran will become the second Renault producer behind France if the projects online properly," he said. Schweitzer said he had assured Iranian autopart makers that their manufacture can come up to the European standards. The French company...

France has been accused of agreeing to a crackdown on exiled opponents of Iran in return for lucrative commercial contracts. Lawyers for France's human rights league, speaking on the anniversary of a huge police raid on the National Council of Resistance of Iran near Paris, pointed out "troubling coincidences" in the timing of the operation and a series of deals with Teheran. In March last year, the regime signed a large contract with the French telecommunications group Alcatel for a telephone network. In April last year Teheran offered the petrol giant TotalFina a £660 million gas fields contract. At the...

Recent intelligence information revealing dramatic progress in Iraq's nuclear- weapons program has given a new urgency to U.S. and British efforts to build international support for war with Iraq, according to Iraqi opposition leaders interviewed by Insight in London. The information, from recent defectors and other sources working with the broad-based Iraqi National Congress (INC), indicates that Baghdad has made "a recent breakthrough" in production of the fissile material needed to produce the bomb. It was buttressed on Sept. 24 when the British government released an "unprecedented" white paper based in part on classified intelligence information on Iraq's weapons of...
