In addition to this all-electric GT, DeLorean eventually plans to offer a coupe with a V-8 and a hydrogen-powered SUV. This is the DeLorean Alpha5. It's just a concept for now, but it previews a would-be production grand tourer with massive two-row gullwing doors and ItalDesign-penned lines. The doors and choice of design house are the two biggest connections to the original DMC-12. As this is a halo car for a brand being launched in the 2020s, this is an all-electric car. That means it's avoided the Renault V-6 family entirely for an unspecified electric powertrain joined to a battery...

Tesla has relied on selling emissions credits to boost its revenue, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has been one of its biggest clients. But now that FCA has merged with the PSA Group to form Stellantis, it won't need Tesla emissions credits anymore, the Financial Times (subscription required) reported this week, based on executive comments.Automakers are allowed to purchase credits to make up for not meeting emissions targets. Because it sells only electric cars, Tesla has always had plenty of credits to sell, creating a major revenue stream for the automaker. Stellantis' decision to stop buying emissions credits from Tesla...

Europe’s extensive social welfare net was showing signs of fraying under economic strain from the coronavirus, as protests erupted Friday for a second day in Spain against layoffs by French carmaker Renault, while Italy’s chief central banker warned that “uncertainty is rife.” Elsewhere, New Zealand has all but eradicated the coronavirus with just one person in the nation of 5 million known to be infected. But developments were grim in other nations, with India reporting a record increase in cases, and Pakistan and Russia a record number of deaths. As cases steadily rose across Africa, officials who are losing the...

Renault Clio ads are perhaps more famous than the car deserves, ‘Papa and Nicole’ (borrowing its theme from a porn film, or so legend has it) still resonates and then there was ‘Va Va Voom’ of course. Anyway the Clio is 30 years old so it’s being celebrated by Publicis.Poke (which seems to be an amalgam of Publicis in London and some other bits) in an intriguing campaign, featuring same sex lovers. As with most in-ad relationships these days they have their ups and downs but get there in the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyPl3tNgVO8 Renault has essayed what were then called lesbian...

And unlike the fabulously-engineered Porsche and the standard-carrying Teslas, this electric car has genuine world-changing potential. ...we concluded that the impressive little car was at least as disruptive as anything Tesla has done... At the time, we heard whispers that Renault's best cost engineers were turning their attention to an electric version of the Kwid and now that it's been announced it's clear that the breakthrough we were hoping for is actually real. Well, they've done it. With 100 miles of reasonably real-world range for under $9,000, Renault has accomplished something that Tesla will likely never be able to achieve...

Tesla sent out an invite to automakers who could use its important zero-emission fleet in Europe and according to an update on the European Commission’s website, Fiat Chrysler took them up on the offer. It also comes at a great time as Tesla is believed to be under a significant cash crunch following a lackluster first quarter in 2019. That said, Tesla shouldn’t expect it to last for too long because automakers don’t like to send money to their competitors.

Fiat Chrysler said May 21 that construction will begin immediately on a new, $1.6-billion assembly plant for Jeep Grand Cherokees, a new Jeep SUV and hybrid cars on Detroit's east side. The automaker receives tax breaks and 215 acres of land adjacent to its Jefferson North Manufacturing plant from the city and state in the deal. The land Fiat Chrysler is getting is valued at $108 million and the tax incentives at a savings of $291 million. To put together the land parcels for the deal, the city of Detroit agreed to purchases and exchanges with prominent landowners such as...

French carmaker Renault will maintain its presence in Iran while taking measures to avoid the risk of penalties for breaching renewed US sanctions, CEO Carlos Ghosn said Friday. “We will not abandon it, even if we have to downsize very strongly,” he said at the annual shareholders’ meeting in Paris. “When the market reopens, the fact of having stayed will certainly give us an advantage,” he predicted. […] Renault’s rival PSA, which produces the Peugeot and Citroën brands, has also announced it will quit Iran to abide by the US sanctions. But Ghosn signaled that Renault, which counted 160,000 cars...

Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn is confident a 237 billion yen ($2.2 billion) investment in a controlling stake in scandal-embroiled Mitsubishi Motors will prove a bargain when sheer size is critical in the auto industry. Japanese transport ministry officials raided Mitsubishi Motors Corp.’s Tokyo headquarters Friday, as part of an investigation into inflated fuel-economy data for several models. […] Mitsubishi’s shares fell 43 percent between April 19 — the day before it announced the fuel economy scandal — and May 11. The stock cost 565 yen ($5.20) Friday, down 1.7 percent following a surge on the deal's news. Gaining Mitsubishi...

It’s a gadget anyone stuck in yet another traffic jam would give their eye-teeth to own. The Renault Kwid concept, a compact car unveiled this week at the Delhi motor show, has a drone-like device that can fly above it and beam back images of the road ahead, The Sunday Times reports. The Flying Companion looks like a miniature helicopter and has three rotors. It can be operated in automatic mode using a preprogrammed flying sequence and GPS guidance, or manually via a control pad inside the car. Besides monitoring the traffic situation, it could spot obstacles ahead and, if...

If you're tooling down the road in your Renault Zoe Z.E. only to have it stop dead in traffic, don't immediately start cussing your mechanic. Better make sure you're current with the payments. The French car maker has added a new twist to the repossession tango between car buyers and creditors.

Forget extra cup holders or power windows: the new Renault Zoe comes with a “feature” that absolutely nobody wants. Instead of selling consumers a complete car that they can use, repair and upgrade as they see fit, Renault has opted to lock purchasers into a rental contract with a battery manufacturer and enforce that contract with digital rights management (DRM)restrictions that can remotely prevent the battery from charging at all. We’ve long joined makers and tinkerers in warning that, as software becomes a part of more and more everyday devices, DRM and the legal restrictions on circumventing it will create...

PARIS (AFP) – Renault publicly apologised on Monday to three top managers it fired for allegedly selling key electric car secrets to China after it emerged the French automaker may have been the victim of fraud. Boss Carlos Ghosn went on prime time television to apologise "personally and in Renault's name", but said he had turned down an offer by his number two, operations chief Patrick Pelata, to resign over the debacle. Renault officials quickly sacked the three managers in January, saying publicly they had proof they had been selling secrets on the electric technology which is expected to change...

China Link Investigated in Renault Spy Case By DAVID GAUTHIER-VILLARS and SEBASTIAN MOFFETT PARIS—Chinese interests may be behind a high-level corporate espionage case related to Renault SA's electric car program that has led to the suspension of three company managers, according to a person familiar with the matter. Renault hasn't given any details as to why it suspended the three managers earlier this week, saying only that they had been involved in a serious breach of confidentiality that put important company assets at risk. In addition to conducting its own internal probe into the breach, the car maker is also...
