Joe Kent, a Republican 3rd Congressional District candidate, believes the Yelm and Rainier communities are a crucial factor in his second attempt running for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. That’s why he visited Mr. Dougs in Yelm on Thursday, Feb. 8 for a meet and greet with approximately 50 supporters in attendance. Despite only a portion of southern Thurston County being represented in the 3rd District, Kent said the region is “key” to his candidacy. “Yelm and Rainier and this little sliver of Thurston County is very important because it’s a very conservative district. We did very...

July 17, 2014 – By measuring how fast Earth conducts electricity and seismic waves, a University of Utah researcher and colleagues made a detailed picture of Mount Rainier’s deep volcanic plumbing and partly molten rock that will erupt again someday. “This is the most direct image yet capturing the melting process that feeds magma into a crustal reservoir that eventually is tapped for eruptions,” says geophysicist Phil Wannamaker, of the university’s Energy & Geoscience Institute and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. “But it does not provide any information on the timing of future eruptions from Mount Rainier or other...

While gun prohibitionists tried to exploit the New Year’s Day slaying of a Mount Rainier National Park ranger, a Seattle-based gun rights forum is already working to set up a memorial fund for Ranger Margaret Anderson’s family. Norm Gildroy, owner of SeattleGuns.net and Wesley Sage, one of the forum’s moderators, moved quickly to demonstrate that it was a lone disturbed individual, not a culture or community, that took the 34-year-old Anderson’s life, stealing her forever from a husband and two small daughters, and a community that liked and respected her. This column already took a hard look at the exploitation,...

About 200 personnel from several law enforcement agencies were involved in the search for Barnes, said Ranger Kevin Bacher at a media briefing. Barnes, who is also a suspect in a New Year's Eve shooting in Skyway, was believed to be heavily armed. Bacher said it's possible that Barnes had sufficient all-weather gear to survive overnight in...

Just climbing to the summit of Mount Rainier would be triumph enough for most people. But for Paul Ferguson, the achievement was symbolic of victory over past failed attempts and a life-threatening disease -- and a final goodbye to a beloved dog. It's been a journey for the 42-year-old Mansfield man, a Lockheed Martin engineer, UT-Arlington doctoral student, mountaineering hobbyist and cancer survivor. But let us backtrack and begin with Mount Rainier, an active volcano in Washington state that soars to 14,410 feet. It's a snowcapped postcard mountain for which Seattle and Tacoma residents build their homes so they'll have a view...

A Muslim who allegedly used his Seattle barber shop to teach children "how to shoot and fight the Americans" has fled to Somalia to avoid prison after he was convicted on federal counterfeiting and weapons charges. Ruben Shumpert, a black American who converted to Islam, was among more than a dozen arrested by the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force two years ago on charges including immigration fraud and bank fraud, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported. Shumpert was able to leave the country because a judge allowed him to keep his passport when he was released from custody prior to sentencing. A...

Learned a few new things last week, leading to this week's posting: The town of Orting, in Washington, sits right on top of the landslide deposits from the Electron mudflow generated by Mount Rainier. A buried tree stump excavated from the Electron mudflow. Ash layers from Mt. St. Helens. I learned last week that after the 1850 BC eruption, the native population abandoned the area for about 2000 years. That's a pretty long length of time for "you don't want to live in that neighborhood" to get passed along around the campfire.
