One of the most controversial and reviled of Catholic documents is Pope Pius IX’s 1864 “Syllabus of Errors,” a long list of popular opinions that the Roman pontiff strongly condemned. Placing the document within its proper historical context, Pius XI was concerned by developments in such countries as the United States, where Catholic education was increasingly restricted under what were called “Blaine amendments.” Among the “errors” Pius IX assailed in the document is the belief that “all public institutes intended for instruction… on the education of youth… should be fully subjected to the civil and political power at the pleasure...

Northern Virginia, the state’s economic engine, is nowhere near ready to reopen Friday when Gov. Ralph Northam plans to begin lifting shutdown restrictions, the region’s top elected officials said Sunday, citing the continuing increase in coronavirus infections and hospitalizations. In a joint letter, the elected leaders in Northern Virginia’s five largest jurisdictions — representing nearly 2.4 million residents — told Northam (D) they are unwilling to lift restrictions in place since late March, which the governor plans to do in a limited capacity Friday in hopes of reviving the state’s ailing economy. Northam announced last week that he will begin...

... There have been 22 homicides in the Prince William so far in 2016, compared to 10 last year. In many communities, the prospect of 22 murders in a year might not seem like a cause for concern. This year the District has so far tallied 134 slayings and neighboring Fairfax County so far had 18 homicides. But the numbers in Prince William County are the highest in the county since authorities began tracking homicides in 1975. The next most deadly year was 2006, when 16 people were slain. ... Experts attribute the increase to a range of factors, including...

A Northern Virginia man admitted Friday in federal court that he spent months plotting to travel to Syria so he could become a fighter with the Islamic State. Joseph Hassan Farrokh, 28, of Woodbridge, unknowingly discussed his plans with FBI informants all along, prosecutors said. He was arrested in January at Richmond International Airport as he was about to board a flight for the first leg of his trip. During a hearing in federal court in Alexandria, Farrokh pleaded guilty to conspiracy to provide material support to the terrorist organization.

WASHINGTON - Local police departments are concerned about a spike in homicides in our area linked to the notorious and dangerous MS-13 gang. At least seven recent murders in the region have confirmed ties to MS-13, and there are two other cases with possible links to the gang known for its brutality. "The spike, if you would call it, occurred at the end of the year. So there were a number of cases right at the end of 2015, and that's concerning because you don't want to see that carry over into 2016," said Capt. Darren Francke of the Montgomery...

Prince William County, Virginia has become well-known in recent years for its tough stance on illegal immigration. So you can imagine how upset some local lawmakers were when they learned that the federal government had contracted to house illegal alien children in their county without informing any county officials. MRCTV spoke to Prince William County Supervisor, Corey Stewart about the situation that was thrust upon his county by the Obama Administration. We then attended a council meeting where outraged citizens spoke out against the move and had some harsh words for both the council members and the federal government. Stewart...

A sign on a restaurant door that reads “No Guns Permitted” isn’t likely to turn many heads at most restaurants. But when the other, bigger sign heralding the name of the establishment reads “Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill,” you can bet a few feathers are getting ruffled. And indeed that’s one of the biggest reactions since the country music star’s restaurant opened last week in Woodbridge, Va., a Washington, D.C. suburb about a half hour south of the nation’s capital. The big sticking point is that gun-rights advocates note that Virginia law lets citizens enter restaurants and bars...

This Wed., March 2, the Prince William County School Board will be voting on what to name the new elementary school opening Fall 2011 on Linton Hall Road. The naming committee came up with the lame name of "Piney Branch Elementary School" -- Ronald Reagan didn't even make the top 18 suggestions of the committee despite it having strong supporters. I first suggested that name early last October and encouraged people to submit it to the naming committee by the Dec. 1 deadline. Following is the message that I sent to the naming committee: Since the new elementary school on...

For the last three years, a county in Virginia has remained under the radar in the immigration debate even though it has a law almost identical to Arizona's immigration law. The ordinance in Prince William County was passed in 2007. It initially required police to check the status of detainees they suspected of being undocumented immigrants but one year later it was revised. Officers now question all criminal suspects about their immigration status once an arrest is made. In 2008, the University of Virginia conducted a survey to see what effects, if any, the Prince William County law had. It...

Board is ‘aghast’ at Principi request By CHERYL CHUMLEY Published: March 12, 2010 Tuesday's closed sessions of the Prince William supervisors' meeting were marked by one item of special interest—the chairman asked for a behind-doors talk about one of the board's own. Following various interviews, what's emerged is that some board members are upset by Supervisor Frank Principi's self-directed attempt to help homeless men by placing them temporarily in county buildings. According to board members, Principi—against county policy—directed county staff to find ways of accomplishing this. The matter came to light at Tuesday's board meeting. Chairman Corey Stewart, R-At-large, requested...

Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) denied clemency for John Allen Muhammad on Tuesday, clearing the way for the sniper to be executed by lethal injection at 9 p.m. and putting an end to one of the most trying local criminal cases in U.S. history. Muhammad, 48, was convicted of capital murder in the slaying of Dean Harold Meyers on Oct. 9, 2002, at a gas station outside of Manassas, part of a spree that left 10 people dead in the Washington area and included shootings in several other states. A jury in Virginia Beach, where the trial was moved...
