Kentucky Gov. Andrew Beshear and Secretary of State Michael G. Adams on Monday postponed the state's primary elections, which originally were scheduled for May 19, to June 23 amid concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. The state becomes the latest in a rapidly growing number to put off their primaries, throwing into question the rest of the 2020 election calendar -- even as voters in three states head to the polls Tuesday. "I never would have imagined sitting here discussing this with you, but these are unprecedented times," Adams said in a video posted to Twitter. "And we Kentuckians are having...

The primary season has only just begun, but already, it has reminded us of several truisms that the major parties always forget from year to year: - That young people just don’t vote in the numbers that older people do, so don’t build your hopes upon changing the makeup of the electorate… - That money can’t make up for a lack of charisma, so a rich bore can’t just spend his way to victory… and of course, - That our primary calendar looks like something designed by a practical jokester rather than someone who wants the best for America. But...

In the Republican Presidential Primary of 1860, there were a number of candidates at the Republican convention, and none of them had a majority of the delegates. The outcome of the convention was that an unlikely candidate was selected, not because he was everybody's "first choice," but because he turned out to be the most popular "second choice" candidate. Other candidates with more delegates could not get selected as the "second choice" by enough to put them over the top with a majority, and Abraham Lincoln was selected and of course went on to win the Presidential election that Fall....

John McCain’s campaign was left gasping for breath this summer, when the Arizonan seemed to run out of money, support and hope. Since then, the opening has been there for any of the other Republican candidates to put Mr. McCain—this contest’s initial front-runner—out of his misery. But here we are, just weeks before the first primary votes will be cast, and Mr. McCain has slowly nursed his way back to relevance and a plausible, if not likely, nomination scenario. It’s a turn of events that says as much about Mr. McCain’s rivals, each of whom seem to be equipped with...

State Rep. Keith Ellison won the 5th District Democratic primary Tuesday. His victory could bring the first black representative from Minnesota to the U.S. House of Representatives and the first Muslim to Congress. Jim Leinfelder, communications director for Ellison, said "buoyant euphoria" lofted through the room after announcement of the win. "I've been to a lot of events like this and it's hard to remember anything like this since (Sen. Paul) Wellstone's first victory," he said.

Primary Numbers Exclusive commentary by Paul M. Weyrich Feb 17, 2004 I apologized to an important political figure in Washington last week on behalf of my profession. I started my professional life as a journalist. Later, when I came to Washington, it was to work with the media from the inside. Then throughout my career, which has included the initiation of eleven conservative institutions, I always considered myself a journalist. When, in 1980, we began to publish what is now Stu Rothenburg’s Political Report, I insisted on journalistic standards. Former Speaker of the House, Tom Foley (D-WA.), called me once...

And so it came to pass, that the prophet Samuel went to the DNC and asked to meet with each of the Democrat Presidential candidates. After meeting with each of the candidates, Samuel asked, "Are these all you have? Is there some other?" We know the names and the proposals of the main Democrat candidates. Are there any 'minor' Democrat candidates on the New Hampshire primary ballot who would represent the principles and values of America? Is there any 'favorite son' candidate from New Hampshire who is on the Democrat primary ballot? Your information and comments, please!

Two religions, two incomes, children from two marriages -- the lives of Democratic hopefuls reflect new times, not campaign fliers of old.

DES MOINES - Dennis Kucinich, on the phone en route to a campaign event, is annoyed. The Ohio representative and presidential hopeful, twice divorced and currently single, is fresh off a date organized by a website trying to find him a wife. His romantic track record raises a fairly obvious, if irritating, question: Could Americans have a problem voting for a man who has trouble staying married?

Conservative Republicans in New Jersey are running a slate of real conservative candidates against the liberal NJ Republicans throughout the state. Many of you know me as a long-time FReeper (with a 3-digit FR id number). I also ran for NJ Assembly 4 years ago. Now, I am campaign manager for Jay Schainholz, who is running for State Senate in District 38. We have a campaign office set up. If you live in northern Jersey, we could really use your help. I am looking for volunteers for a number of campaign tasks every day, in the morning, afternoon, and evening....

The fight over the date of California's presidential primary may have as much to do with Gov. Gray Davis' political dreams and the state races on the same ballot as with the national presidential campaign.

The question is this: Should California have three statewide elections in one year, with one set aside for presidential contenders?

HARRISBURG — The May 21 primary election will take place as scheduled based on a court ruling Tuesday that pulled Pennsylvania’s political world back from the brink of chaos. A three-judge federal panel reversed itself, saying that a congressional map it ruled unconstitutional on April 8 can stand for the primary. The appeal requested that the map stay in effect through 2002 and that a new map be drawn for the 2004 elections.
