Sanders blasts U.S Corporations for Dodging Taxes BURLINGTON, Vt., April 9 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the Senate Budget Committee ranking member, today issued the following statement on new data showing the extent to which some American companies are avoiding taxes: “I applaud Citizens for Tax Justice for releasing new data today revealing the unfairness of our tax system and the fact that a number of the biggest and most-well known corporations in America continue to pay little or nothing in taxes. At a time when we have massive wealth and income inequality, and when corporate profits are soaring, it...

"Save yourself - some money." Those were William Shatner's last words as Priceline's "Negotiator." The discount-price travel booking site apparently killed off the television and movie legend last week in a TV advertisement. In the commercial, which has been airing nationally and will also be shown during the Super Bowl pre-game show, Shatner's character saves the lives of fellow travelers as their bus teeters on the edge of a bridge. As the last passenger steps off, Shatner says "Save yourself - some money," handing his cellphone to a woman just before the bus falls off the bridge, bursting into flames...

Well, this sure has been fun. Sort of like going to the dentist. With the backdrop of the debt ceiling game of chicken, not to mention Europe’s troubles, weighing heavily on the market, the IBD 50 techs that have reported the past two weeks have mostly floundered. It’s been a rough earns season, folks.

This is the last big week – big meaning in terms of numbers of companies reporting – for March-quarter earnings, and the techs on the latest IBD 50 are well-represented. Leading the way is longtime Top 10 stock Priceline. This latest crop will do well to match last week’s crew. All had pretty good numbers, but the profit outlook for Netflix (NFLX) disappointed, and investors in highflying Baidu (BIDU) wanted more. But Sohu (SOHU), Altera (ALTR), ARM (ARMH), Acme Packet (APKT), Open Text (OTEX) and Skyworks Solutions (SWKS) had nice pops

Is William Shatner officially a billionaire? He may be, thanks to Priceline.com. Quietly PCLN shares have surged to yet another record high. They're up nearly $90 bucks this year alone and are closing in on $500. When Captain Kirk .. er, Shatner .. became Priceline's pitchman more than a decade ago, he smartly (or desperately) decided to be paid in stock. After a brief run during the tech boom Priceline shares went into the dump, bottoming out below $2. Then the run began. While we don't know how many shares or options Shatner was given, or if he has held...

Sluggish consumer spending over the summer raised concerns that Americans were finally reining in their purchases amid high unemployment and other head winds. But spending has picked up in recent months, and leading U.S. consumer-related stocks are near the top of the IBD 100 list of superior companies based on fundamentals and technicals. A word of warning: Many of these stocks have been so hot

Here is cautionary tale for travelers considering using Priceline to book their travel... I haven't used Priceline for years because of bad experiences in the past. But I thought I'd give them one more try. I booked a hotel room through Priceline for our family, and requested 2 beds, but got a standard room with 1 king sized bed instead. Somehow in the booking process Priceline swapped what we asked for without us knowing. I'm sure this was just a glitch of their computer system , but none-the-less we didn't know this had occured first. I discovered this later when...

INVESTORS HAVE BEEN FIXATED on Google the past few weeks, as its shares have tumbled nearly 25% from a peak of $475 -- and the fact is, there could be a lot more tumbling ahead. The share price could well be cut in half over the next year as the Internet giant grapples with growing competition from Microsoft and Yahoo!, increased pricing pressures in its online ad sales and mounting concern about what's known as click fraud. Suffice it to say, there are those who disagree... But the list of challenges the company faces is nothing short of mind-googling. As...

The captain of the USS Enterprise thinks people should stay on Earth instead of going into space. Patrick Stewart, who plays Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the TV series Star Trek, says he thinks interplanetary travel for humans is a bad idea. "I'm a bit of a wet blanket when it comes to the whole business of space travel," Stewart told the BBC. "I would like to see us get this place right first before we have the arrogance to put significantly flawed civilisations out onto other planets - even though they may be utterly uninhabited," he said. Stewart said he...
