Marvel is finally pushing ahead with the highly anticipated “Black Widow” standalone movie starring Scarlett Johansson, with Jac Schaeffer penning the script. Sources say this is still very early development, as the film has no greenlight, but naming a writer is the closest the studio has come to moving forward on a standalone pic. Marvel President Kevin Feige met with several candidates before tapping Schaeffer, and Marvel execs met with Johansson to discuss what they wanted from a “Black Widow” writer. Schaeffer is an up and coming scribe who broke out with her Black List script “The Shower,” a comedy...

These days, reboots are all the rage in film. Now it’s believed that Fast & Furious director Justin Lin has his eyes set on a Lethal Weapon reboot. If that news isn’t exciting on its own, then it’s who he has his sights set on that should really be the talk of the industry. The Tracking Board reports that Lin wants none other than Thor’s Chris Hemsworth to take the lead role in the upcoming reboot for Lethal Weapon. As some of you may or should know, Australian actor Mel Gibson took the title role of Martin Riggs, and it...

It will be back. The "Terminator," that is. The franchise is getting a reboot, Paramount announced Thursday, with three new films set to roll out soon. There's no official word on whether Arnold Schwarzenegger, 65, will resume the title role, but according to the Los Angeles Times, insiders say the actor is expected to be involved in the films in some way. Schwarzenegger played the lead role of a robotic assassin in the first movie, released in 1984. The original film and its sequels earned more than $1 billion at the box office worldwide.

"Call it "a live-action 'Call of Duty.'" Call it "fast, smart, hard." Call it a remake, a reimagining, whatever. The new "Red Dawn" is high on our list of action flicks that have us pumped about the 2010 cinema schedule. And while the updated version will make some key changes to the 1984 flick's storyline, the original's red, white and blue center will stay just the same."

It's official! New Line is developing a feature film based on "MacGyver." The daughter of Dino De Laurentiis, Raffaella De Laurentiis, is producing the film through her Raffaella Prods. And Mister Laurentiis is taking the role of executive producer. According to a recent poll, "MacGyver" beat "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "24" as America's favorite TV action hero! So can "MacGyver" be a global franchise? New Line's Richard Brener says, "We think we're a stick of chewing gum, a paper clip and an A-list writer away from a global franchise."

DiCaprio Bringing Akira To Life Leonardo DiCaprio is teaming up with Warner Brothers to produce a live-action film based on the Japanese manga and anime film Akira, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Ruairi Robinson has been hired to direct what would ideally be a two-part epic. The film would mark the first full-length feature for Robinson, whose animated SF comedy short Fifty Percent Grey was nominated for an Oscar. Gary Whitta is writing the adaptation, which DiCaprio will produce through his production company, Appian Way. Akira originated in 1988 as a manga and then as an animated film co-written and...

This summer, the Sci Fi Channel gears up for the Aug. 10 premiere of Flash Gordon, a live-action series based on the original 1934 comic strip. The name may be familiar from the radio serials, novels, films, and other TV series the comic has inspired — but Sci Fi's series will go back to the very beginning of the hero's story. Smallville's Eric Johnson, who stars as Flash, knows a thing or two about that. The native Canadian called in on Victoria Day (and his day off) to give EW the scoop.

There is a spectre haunting movieland. It’s a terrifying hybrid monster mercilessly built from a rag-tag collection of shoulder pads, talking cars, oil barons, dual-purpose robots, tough-talking coppers, pint-sized investigators and high-kicking amphibians. It is, of course, the Eighties. The briefest glance at upcoming movie release schedules reveals an industry that’s worryingly in thrall to a decade often viewed as, well, culturally bereft. A new big-screen version of that irritating kiddie staple Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, out this week, will be followed in July by Michael Bay’s blockbusting adaptation of the champion nerd-fest Transformers — a movie based on a...

If the state of California, like many of its citizens, sent Christmas letters with its greeting cards, here's what they might say this year: Dear Friends, What a glorious, hopeful feeling there was under the Capitol dome as this year began! Gray Davis was gone. Enough said about that. We were just getting to know our new governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Far from an empty-headed bodybuilder and actor, he was turning out to be a savvy politician with a quick grasp of issues. On top of that, the "action governor" had a style as swashbuckling as his movie characters. That's why...
