This summer, the Sci Fi Channel gears up for the Aug. 10 premiere of Flash Gordon, a live-action series based on the original 1934 comic strip. The name may be familiar from the radio serials, novels, films, and other TV series the comic has inspired but Sci Fi's series will go back to the very beginning of the hero's story. Smallville's Eric Johnson, who stars as Flash, knows a thing or two about that. The native Canadian called in on Victoria Day (and his day off) to give EW the scoop.

But will it feature a spandex-clad villainess a la the movie?
Where is Buster Crap when we need him?
Sounds like fun - SG1 is going to be greatly missed...
The original serial movies from the 30s had obviously cardboard or wood ships, and cardboard /wooden acting...and the good guys generally wore Robin Hood style costumes while the bad guys had uniforms that looked suspiciously like off-cast Roman armor.
I’m thinkin’ they didn’t exactly have a splendiferous budget.
They were hilarious!
LOL! That’s what I’m talking about...
Commenting on his acting?
When I was a kid, the local PBS station aired old serial on Saturdays and Flash Gordon episodes were among those. Those serials and Japanese monster/sci-fi movies account for my slighlty odd viewing choices. It is no wonder that I am a Mistie.
The movie from 1980 is fun. I take the film with massive grains of salt. Kosher rock salt.
At one point, a bunch of those really old Flash Gordon serials were put onto really cheap VHS tapes and sold at department stores, along with various other old movies that weren’t really much in demand. Dad, being the frugal guy he is, bought a bunch of those on sale, so we spent a lot of happy afternoons watching Flash Gordon and Tom Mix and Charlie Chan and other old, very un-PC cheese.
It was glorious...in its own way. ;-)
Haven’t seen the 80s Flash Gordon. Heh...I might have to get it from Netflix one of these days. Some sci-fi is so bad, it’s good, if ya know what I mean...
The 1980 movie was excellent campy bubblegum for the brain.
The sets can be described as Art Deco meets Disco...on acid.
I recommend it for some mindless fun.
DITTO.....
Heh. I list it as a guilty pleasure. I take thr film for what it was and is and go along for the ride. Also, the soundtrack is enjoyable.
I wish that they could find a way to work Emilie Simon or Mylène Farmer into the new show as guest stars. They don’t need speaking roles...
or Ornella Muti
Soundtrack by....QUEEN!
It starred Timothy Dalton, too.
It was a great guilty pleasure, they need to make a remake though, with Will Smith, IMO.
Good ol’ Princess Aura. Why the heck not? ‘Twould be a fun treat for folks who have seen and enjoyed the 1980 film.
Once in a while, the title song from the soundtrack does pop into my head. I would like to rig the door to my office to play it when I open the door...
Will as Flash or Dr. Zarkov?
