They always "claim" they are returning to the original source material. It is code so that their writers can take original credit and not have to include any other writers who ever adapted the material.
The same lie was told when they made the Addams Family movies and claimed they had nothing to do with the tv show, just Charles Addams' comics.
Here's some of Alex Raymond's original lush artwork, for what it's worth. They could even adapt Al Williamson's work on the comic and be in good territory.
