This summer, the Sci Fi Channel gears up for the Aug. 10 premiere of Flash Gordon, a live-action series based on the original 1934 comic strip. The name may be familiar from the radio serials, novels, films, and other TV series the comic has inspired but Sci Fi's series will go back to the very beginning of the hero's story. Smallville's Eric Johnson, who stars as Flash, knows a thing or two about that. The native Canadian called in on Victoria Day (and his day off) to give EW the scoop.

As a child my family took a vacation at the Concord hotel in the Catskills, a region better known as the “Borscht belt.” Think Dirty Dancing and you know the kind of hotel I mean. Buddy Hacket was the nightly entertainment in the lounge.
Buster Crabbe, the Flash Gordon of the 1930s serials, was down on his luck, so to speak, and was working as the “swimming pro” at this hotel (he had been a huge Olympic swimming medalist earlier in his career). He ran an exhibition series of events, including races by age, and I won the race for my 12 and under age group.
A little later when I was in the dressing room changing he came in and changed out of his swimsuit into normal clothes. In front of me. I saw Flash Gordon nekkid! I was marked for life and could never view that story without thinking about that!
But that’s my problem...
I agree.....
Now that you have said that, I am reminded of a bit of trivia that I dscovered in a thick book on Sci-Fi film. When I was reading an entry on Flash Gordon (the serials and the 1980 film), there was an inset on the page that stated that a porn version had been made. It was titled “Flesh Gordon”.
Oh, yeah. The Penisauruses. Monsters from the movie. Mad Magazine did a comic parody called, “Flesh Garden,” too.
Dear ol’ Mad Magazine. I still have my collection in a couple of boxes...somewhere in the house.
Flesh: What" Another monster? A Zuk?
Noahzark: No Flesh! Dale Was merely choking on a peach pit!
I kind of like the 1980’s movie, Dale was hot in that one. I esp. like when she does the cheerleader thing in that one one scene.
Dino De Laurentis made a number of Italian Pop Art comic book films, often campy and generally stylish and fun.
Barbarella, Diabolik, Flash Gordon... Even when he didn’t direct, he produced.
Craig T. Nelson did the voice of one of the stop motion animated monsters in that and they recently showed a clip on The Tonight Show. Times have changed.
I’ll have to take your word for it because it don’t care to verify it.
The first time that I saw Diabolik was on MST3K.
FLASH... AH AH!!! He’ll save everyone of us!
Damnit, now I gotta go rent it again just for old time's sakes!
Right now, I feel like going on carousel!
Don’t forget the Borer Worms...
Has your little crystal turned red?
The same lie was told when they made the Addams Family movies and claimed they had nothing to do with the tv show, just Charles Addams' comics.
Here's some of Alex Raymond's original lush artwork, for what it's worth. They could even adapt Al Williamson's work on the comic and be in good territory.
Alex Raymond:
Al Williamson:
Give me the Tenacious D cover...
Whoops. My bad.
