SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are on the scene of a drive-by shooting in Otay Mesa West where a person is dead and three others are wounded by gunfire at a park Friday evening. According to the San Diego Police Department, officers received a call at 7:09 p.m. about shots fired in the 3000 block of Coronado Avenue. When authorities arrived at the Montgomery-Waller Community Park, they found four victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry seized more than 1,000 pounds of methamphetamine — worth an estimated $2.5 million — in a shipment of watermelons last week, authorities said. Officers arrested the driver, a 47-year-old Mexican national, on allegations of attempted drug smuggling. It was the second major seizure of methamphetamine at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry announced in the past week. Personnel from San Diego Fire rescue found the men and women around 1 a.m. three feet underground and about 10 feet from the end of a sewer pipe on Via De La Amistad, which is just east of the Port of Entry. SAN DIEGO – U.S. authorities dug Monday into a crudely constructed cross-border tunnel that exits near a San Ysidro parking lot. Investigators could not say whether the tunnel had been completed. SAN DIEGO – A van carrying suspected illegal immigrants overturned on an Otay Mesa freeway Saturday, injuring at least eight passengers, authorities said. The crash on State Route 905 and Otay Mesa Road was reported at 2:43 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. A San Diego fire dispatcher said eight people were taken to area hospitals.
