Customs and Border Protection officers at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry seized more than 1,000 pounds of methamphetamine — worth an estimated $2.5 million — in a shipment of watermelons last week, authorities said. Officers arrested the driver, a 47-year-old Mexican national, on allegations of attempted drug smuggling. It was the second major seizure of methamphetamine at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry announced in the past week. On Tuesday, authorities said they recently found more than 2,400 pounds of meth worth $5.5 million in a medical supply shipment.

Personnel from San Diego Fire rescue found the men and women around 1 a.m. three feet underground and about 10 feet from the end of a sewer pipe on Via De La Amistad, which is just east of the Port of Entry. Rescuers worked for over an hour to free the adults. The five people had to crawl through mud and sewage to get out of the pipe. Customs officers intercepted 12 alleged drug smugglers in a 24-hour period at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa border crossings and seized 763 pounds of marijuana, methamphetamine and cocaine worth an estimated $1.16 million, authorities said Friday. The spate of arrests took place between 6 a.m. Thursday and 6 a.m Friday. In three cases, authorities said the alleged smugglers were U.S. citizens who tried to walk across the San Ysidro border crossing with marijuana strapped to their bodies. About 7 a.m. Thursday, customs officers working with a drug-sniffing dog arrested a 19-year-old man -- a U.S. citizen who lives in...

BISBEE — A recent court decision that held the Border Patrol liable for occupying private property in California might be applied to lands in other places near the U.S.-Mexico border, including Cochise County. Otay Mesa Property LP, Rancho Vista Del Mar and Otay International LLC filed a lawsuit in March 2006 seeking compensation for the use of 750 acres of valuable development land in San Diego County. Without permission from landowners, the Border Patrol buried numerous sensors, and then entered the property when the sensors indicated movement of potential illegal immigrants. On Tuesday, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims held...

The Border Patrol is claiming success along a formerly chaotic five-mile stretch of the border between the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry, where fencing was raised and reinforced with razor-studded concertina wire. Yesterday, agents in San Diego celebrated the completion of the wire project, begun in December and mostly finished about two months ago. The Border Patrol said both illegal-crossing arrests and assaults against agents in the area are down by more than 50 percent. However, a growing number of apprehensions and assaults are occurring west of the San Ysidro port of entry, and overall arrests in...

A U.S. Border Patrol agent shot at a driver suspected of smuggling illegal immigrants Tuesday, authorities said. No one was injured. The driver tried to run down the agent and was arrested later after being pulled over Interstate 15, said Damon Foreman, a Border Patrol spokesman. Traffic was snarled for hours during the morning commute. Foreman said agents became suspicious of a van they spotted on a dusty road near San Diego's Otay Mesa border crossing around 4:30 a.m. and followed the driver. As an agent approached the van on state Route 905, the driver put the vehicle in reverse...

SAN DIEGO – U.S. authorities dug Monday into a crudely constructed cross-border tunnel that exits near a San Ysidro parking lot. Investigators could not say whether the tunnel had been completed. Drug cartels are suspected of building the cross border tunnels as a means of smuggling narcotics into the United States. The tunnel was found Friday, said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, but authorities disclosed little information on its discovery. “It was a result of an ongoing investigation,” Mack said Monday. “The investigation continued until agents opened it up at 6 a.m. this morning.” The...
