The Politico) Former Republican congresswoman Anne Northup will be running again for her old seat in a rematch against the Democrat who ousted her, Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.). “She’s going to jump in,” said her longtime political adviser Ted Jackson. “She starts off as a very serious challenger in this race.” Aided by ethical scandals surrounding then-Gov. Ernie Fletcher and the unpopularity of the national GOP, Yarmuth rode the Democratic tide and defeated Northup by three points in 2006. Since leaving Congress, she ran unsuccessfully for her party’s gubernatorial nomination against Fletcher last year. In the governor’s race, she carried...

Could former congresswoman Anne Northup have one more run in her? WHAS11’s Mark Hebert has learned that Northup is considering a run for her old congressional seat. Once again taking on John Yarmuth. There was plenty of speculation that Anne Northup might be done with statewide politics after losing her second race in a row, her defeat in the governor’s race last year. But Northup’s still got plenty of support in Louisville and it sounds like she might try to ride that support back to Washington: Anne Northup looks well rested and sounds like she’s excited about the possibility of...

Governor Ernie Fletcher's reelection hopes stayed alive Tuesday, as he turned back two Republican challengers to advance to the November general election. The Associated Press declared him the winner around 9 Tuesday evening. Fletcher defeated former U.S. Representative Anne Northup, and Paducah businessman Billy Harper. As for the Democrats, Steve Beshear leads with nearly 80 percent of all votes counted. But it's still possible there could be a runoff, as Beshear is hovering around 40 percent of the vote. If no Democratic candidate gets 40 percent of the vote, there will be a runoff between the top two finishers in...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning broke with the sitting governor from his own party on Monday, throwing his support behind Anne Northup's campaign to unseat Gov. Ernie Fletcher in the Republican primary. Fletcher has garnered endorsements from a number of Republican politicians, but Bunning became the biggest name to back a candidate in the May GOP primary. Fletcher said he didn't consider it a snub. "I'm very confident that this is just all in the family, if you will, and after the primary we'll all come together as a family again," Fletcher told reporters in Frankfort after Bunning's...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Former U.S. Rep. Anne Northup plans to challenge Gov. Ernie Fletcher in the Republican gubernatorial primary, her campaign said Tuesday. Northup, who served five House terms until her defeat by John Yarmuth in November, will file her candidacy papers for the May primary on Wednesday, said campaign manager Cam Savage. Fletcher, the first Republican elected Kentucky governor in a generation, also is being challenged by Paducah businessman Billy Harper in the GOP primary. Northup and Fletcher served together in Congress until Fletcher's election as governor in 2003. Fletcher campaign manager Marty Ryall said Northup's entry into the...

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld must go. That's the startling declaration made by third district Congresswoman Anne Northup on Newsradio 84's Joe Elliot Show Tuesday night. It's a radical departure for the GOP incumbent from Louisville, since she has been a staunch backer of the Bush Administraton and it's policies, including the decision to go to war. Northup said while Rumsfeld has done a great job revamping the Pentagon, his handling of the war in Iraq has been shaky at best in recent weeks. She compared the embattled Defense Secretary to a coach with a losing strategy, saying it's time for...

A former campaign aide to Rep. Anne Northup (R-Ky.) embezzled $20,000 from the congresswoman’s re-election campaign in 2002, a senior campaign official has confirmed. The embezzlement allegations will be revealed next week when the campaign files its fourth-quarter fundraising report with the Federal Election Commission. The woman, Stephine Stottmann, stole the money over several months by cashing her paychecks but telling campaign officials she had lost them and obtaining reimbursement checks, the official said. There was a delay in discovering the duplicity, the official said, because the money came from two different sources: first the payroll service and later the...

WESTNevada. Rep. Jim Gibbons, possibly Republicans’ best hope for defeating Democratic Sen. Harry Reid in 2004, is due to arrive in Iraq today as part of a fact-finding mission. Gibbons, who is traveling to Iraq with other members of the House Select Committee on Intelligence -- Chairman Porter Goss (Fla.) and Democrats Jane Harman (Calif.) and Bud Cramer (Ala.) -- is in his fourth term. He won reelection in 2002 with 74 percent of the vote. Nevada Republicans say Gibbons would make a good Senate candidate because he has high name recognition and his district encompasses most of the state....

Summers of non-election years rarely mark the height of campaign combat: Fundraising tapers off after the mad rush of June, the legislative calendar dominates July and many members of Congress head for vacation in August. But for a small group of nervous representatives who narrowly won their seats last year, this summer will be as frenetic and full of politicking as ever. These members -- between 20 and 30 freshmen and a smattering of veterans from both parties -- will spend the next three months at backyard fundraisers, town-hall meetings, church outings and meet-and-greets with veterans, teachers and business leaders....
