Hall of Fame hurler Nolan Ryan left a lasting impression on the state of Texas and on Major League Baseball with an illustrious 27-year career. His 5,714 strikeouts, 324 wins and seven no-hitters cemented his legacy as one of the greats. But it was 24 years ago Friday that the Ryan Express immortalized himself -- and it didn’t have much to do with his pitching that day. On August 4, 1993, the 46-year-old Ryan drilled Chicago White Sox third baseman Robin Ventura in the elbow with a fastball. Ventura then made a decision he undoubtedly regrets to this day. He...

Over the course of his 27-year career, Nolan Ryan won 324 games and struck out an all-time best 5,714 batters. It was presumably those feats of longevity and performance that made him a first-ballot Hall of Famer and placed him on a short list of the greatest pitchers of all time. Ryan is also remembered, however, for being involved in one of the most memorable brawls in baseball history -- and being someone you absolutely do not want to mess with. On Aug. 4, 1993 -- the final season of Ryan's career -- the righty toed the rubber for a...

he Washington Nationals have been mired in turmoil over the past week, but Max Scherzer made the pain of dugout brawls and clubhouse chaos disappear Saturday night as he twirled his second no-hitter of the season in a 2-0 win over the New York Mets at Citi Field. Scherzer's the second pitcher to record two no-hitters in the regular season since 1973. The other, according to B/R Insights, is Nolan Ryan. Washington's ace recorded 17 strikeouts in the win—seven more than he notched in his no-hit effort on June 20 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 17 strikeouts also tied Ryan...

Ever since his Texas Rangers collapsed over the final two games of the World Series last week, Nolan Ryan says he hasn't watched the disappointing replay of David Freese's(notes) triple sailing over Nelson Cruz's(notes) head in the ninth inning of Game 6. He doesn't plan to, either. But while Ryan concedes he may accidentally see the replay while watching something else, everyone's favorite fireballer says he's going to make dang sure that another highlight won't be played when the Chicago White Sox come to opening day at Rangers Ballpark next April. That, of course, would be the clip of Ryan...

Arlington, TX—In order to get a piece of the action, the Texas Rangers will pay tribute to Muslims all over the world by halving half price tickets and parking for all Muslims that attend their game on Saturday, June 13, 2009. The Texas Rangers will play the Los Angeles Dodgers in interleague play, and feel that since Obama has praised the entire Muslim world, that they should also do the same thing, knowing that America has become a “Muslim Nation.” Many have speculated that this may be a bad move, but the owner—Tom Hicks—assures people that this is simply taking...

Arlington, TX—Having grown weary of competition, General Manager Jon Daniels announced that there will be a series of fines for good play. The announcement came Tuesday, April 7, 2009, in hopes of curtailing the success of the franchise during an economic malaise. According to Daniels, the decision wasn’t a difficult one. He insisted that success is a negative reminder to the unemployed, and that “feelings of guilt could cause tragedy amongst family members and baseball fans.”

A Father's Day message from Nolan Ryan When you think of how fathers, grandfathers and other male figures fit into family life, what comes to mind? As we celebrate Father's Day, it's natural to focus on the simple pleasures such as summer vacations, barbeques, and of course, friendly games of backyard baseball. This year, in addition to thinking about these memories, I encourage Texas father figures to remember a crucial contribution they make to families: creating an atmosphere of safety and respect for others. It's important we don't take this contribution for granted because, unfortunately, there are many homes in...

To our fellow Americans: We have given much thought to the values and characteristics that make a great athlete. Our lives have been spent trying to run farther, push further, and jump higher than the person beside us, or across the field of our chosen sport. With years of training and exhaustive competition beneath our belts, we have identified the values necessary to compete and win--values like personal strength, determination, a sense of fair play and faith. The same qualities that make a great athlete make a great President--the determination to do what is right, regardless of the latest polls,...
