California has confirmed the first case of a new, more lethal strain of mpox in a man who recently traveled to Africa, and public health officials now want to speak with anyone who may met the person. The new mpox clade I strain has a higher mortality rate than the earlier clade IIb strain that caused a global outbreak in 2022 and greatly impacted gay men. The World Health Organization declared a global public health emergency over the spread of the clade I mpox strain in August after the number of cases exploded in Africa.

FRIDAY, Oct. 11, 2024 (HealthDay News) -- Infection with the mpox virus is five times more likely among gay and bisexual men who engage in unprotected anal sex as the receptive partner, a new analysis reveals. The study dovetails with the release of a second report on clusters of mpox cases in California and Illinois of a strain of mpox that's resistant to treatment with the first-line drug tecovirimat. Because not all viruses from mpox cases are genetically scrutinized, "these findings likely underestimate the prevalence of this newly recognized drug-resistant variant," noted a team led by Crystal Gigante. She's an...

Children in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo are worst-affected by the current outbreak of mpox, which has been declared a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization. The country accounts for nearly all of this year’s recorded cases and more than 450 deaths. “It began like a small, inflamed spot. The mother squeezed it and watery discharge came out. Then another developed, and after a short period, they were all over the body,” says Alain Matabaro, describing how mpox developed in his six-year-old son Amani. He started recovering after four days of treatment...

An Italian man has simultaneously tested positive for monkeypox, HIV and COVID-19 after returning home from a holiday, according to a paper published in the Journal of Infection. The 36-year-old reported having intercourse with men without a condom during a five-day Spanish holiday from June 16 to 20. Nine days after his trip, he developed a fever, sore throat, fatigue and headache before testing positive for COVID-19 on July 2.

BUENOS AIRES, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Argentine authorities have quarantined a cargo ship in the Parana River over a suspected case of mpox onboard, the government said on Tuesday, as global public health authorities remain on alert for a new faster-spreading variant of the virus. The quarantined Liberian-flagged ship was sailing from Santos, Brazil - also a major commodities hub - to pick up soy cargo, according to the health ministry and industry body the Argentine Naval League. The World Health Organization (WHO) last week declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years as...

Mpox has been declared a public health emergency by the World Health Organization in response to a new, potentially deadlier strain of the virus circulating in Africa. On Thursday, the first case of this new variant was detected outside the continent, in Sweden. So what does this mean for vaccinations? Do they still work against the new variant? And do you need a booster? Newsweek spoke to experts to find out. Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, gained recognition during the global outbreak in 2022, affecting the U.S., Europe, Australia and many other countries. The virus comes in two "flavors"—clade I...

Our computer reveals the data, but the events that unfold to produce the event are unknown. The year 2026 shows massive changes in the disease cycle. The World Health Organization has just announced the next global health emergency – monkeypox. I reported in May 2022 that the US Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) was already developing a vaccine for monkeypox. Although the disease may seem novel, the first reported outbreak in monkeys occurred in 1958, and the first human infection was reported in the 1970s in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). According to the Centers for...

~As I wrote almost two decades ago in my international bestseller America Alone: Contemporary multiculturalism absolves one from knowing anything about other cultures as long as one feels warm and fluffy toward them... 'Celebrate diversity' with a uniformity of ignorance. But even so, short of going to the "Free Palestine" demo and reading out your Israeli Independence Day speech, this is kind of impressive: NEWS New York City Mayor Eric Adams referred to India and its diaspora community as "Pakistan" multiple times during an Indian Independence Day celebration in Queens. The crowd repeatedly corrected Adams, but he continued to confuse...

VIDEOMPOX which used to be called Monkey Pox but was changed so as not to offend monkeys is in the news. Apparently Bird Flu did not cause much of a frightened reaction so it was switched out just ahead of the November election for Monkey Pox now known as MPOX. I hope this video provides you with the information you might need to make an informed decision as to whether or not to take the Monkey Pox Vaccine.

The new and more dangerous strain of the mpox virus has been detected in Sweden, health authorities announced Thursday, marking the first time the pathogen has been found outside continental Africa. A person who sought clinical care in the Stockholm region was found to have mpox -- previously called monkeypox -- caused by the rapidly spreading variant known as Clade I, Sweden's Public Health Authority announced. The World Health Organization this week classified the spread of mpox Clade I in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries as an international emergency and a threat to human health. It's the...

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox to be a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) on Wednesday "Today, the Emergency Committee met and advised me that in its view, the situation constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice," said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during a media briefing on Wednesday. In the U.S, there have been 1,634 cases of mpox reported so far this year, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That's more than double the number of national cases seen at the same...

CNN — The World Health Organization on Wednesday declared the ongoing mpox outbreak in Africa a global health emergency. WHO convened its emergency mpox committee amid concerns that a deadlier strain of the virus, clade Ib, had reached four previously unaffected provinces in Africa. This strain had previously been contained to the Democratic Republic of Congo.Independent experts on the committee met virtually Wednesday to advise WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on the severity of the outbreak. After that consultation, he announced Wednesday that he had declared a public health emergency of international concern — the highest level of alarm under...

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has never done anything like this before. The agency is poised to declare a “public health emergency of continental security” as early as next week. Since the beginning of last year, mpox cases have been surging in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with children making up the majority of the 14,000 reported cases and 511 deaths so far in 2024. Those numbers roughly match the number of cases reported in all of last year in the country. Why Africa is so worried In the last couple weeks, there’s been a new and...

One of the 229 people diagnosed with mpox in Ireland during the recent outbreak had 75 different sexual partners in the 21 days before they developed symptoms of the disease, a new study has revealed. The review of cases also found that 96.5 per cent of confirmed infections had been sexually transmitted. All but three of the infected patients were men, and 98.6 per cent identified as gay, bisexual or men who have sex with men (gbMSM). The youngest patient was 16 and the oldest was 68, and more than one in four (28.3 per cent) were HIV positive, according...

Dr Anthony Fauci's former department 'deceived' Congress over its plans to create a Frankenstein monkeypox virus that had pandemic potential, a new report says. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), along with the NIH and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) submitted plans to create a more transmissible and more lethal strain of Mpox in 2015, when Dr Fauci was still in charge. The plans to create a deadlier and highly contagious pathogen were given the green light, but those involved repeatedly lied to lawmakers, asserting the research had never been approved.

The central African nation of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is battling a record number of cases of mpox, fueled by a strain with a higher death rate than the variant that spread in Europe and America in 2022. Getting the DRC outbreak under control, and containing it to within that country, is imperative, experts at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a report issued Thursday. The spread of the lethal clade I strain of mpox "raises concerns that the virus could spread to other countries and underscores the importance of coordinated, urgent global action...

A mutant strain of monkeypox with 'pandemic potential' has been found in a town in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The virus is a descendent of the deadlier clade 1 mpox strain, but has evolved to become even more infectious and better at evading tests than its predecessor. The concerning discovery was made in Kamituga – a poor, densely populated gold mining town that is feared to be ripe for an explosive outbreak. So far there have been 108 cases. Researchers who detailed the virus in a pre-print have called for 'urgent measures' to contain the virus and avoid a...
