Diplomacy: Like a guilt-ridden divorced dad, President Obama met with Mexico's President Calderon Thursday — and quickly caved in to all he asked. That's a jackpot for Mexico. But for the U.S., it's a mixed bag. The only reason Thursday's White House meeting between President Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon wasn't a complete loss for the U.S. was that some of the Mexican leader's agenda was to persuade Obama to respect free markets, honor U.S. treaty obligations, and help win Mexico's war spilling over the U.S. border. Up until now, Obama's paid scant attention to any of these issues,...

Mexican officials have reportedly identified two men they say are suspects in a pirate attack nine days ago on a Texas couple Jet Skiing on a border lake in which the husband was killed. Mexican officials have not released photographs of the two men, but identified them as Pedro Saldiva Farrias, 27, and his brother, Jose Manuel Saldiva Farrias, Juan Carlos Ballesteros, an investigator with the attorney general's office of the Mexican state of Tamaulpas told ABC affiliate KRGV-TV in McAllen, Texas. Both were said to be suspected members of the Zeta drug cartel from Nueva Ciudad Guerrero, near the...

With drug violence raging in Mexico, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says a surge in federal agents in Arizona has helped the United States recover about 1,300 firearms in the last 100 days, many of them believed bound for Mexico. Federal law enforcement officials say the success is prompting the ATF to roll out similar techniques in seven additional cities believed to be hotbeds for gun traffickers. The current operation involved the deployment of a Project Gun Runner Impact Team (GRIT) to combat the deadly flow of weapons from the United States to Mexico's ongoing drug...

Mexican President Felipe Calderon said in an interview Friday that last month’s massacre of 72 migrants doesn't undermine Mexico's moral authority to demand better treatment for its own migrants. "Of course we have the moral authority, because Mexican officials are not shooting Central American youths at the border, but U.S. agents are shooting Mexican migrants," Calderon said in an interview with the Spanish-language Univision network. "If we are talking about responsibility, at the root of this, in the case of immigration, is the lack of immigration legislation in the United States that would recognize this phenomenon," Calderon said.

The federal government closed a portion of a US park in Arizona four years ago due to violence perpetuated by illegal aliens and smugglers along the US/Mexico border. Maybe the president will be up to the task of “kicking some a$$” to get the United States border secured? This is looking pretty bad. In October of 2006, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service closed a 3,500 acre portion of the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge. Has the United States government just given up this land to illegal aliens, smugglers, drug traffickers and other miscreants?

MEXICO CITY (AP) - President Felipe Calderon said Monday that the death of a Mexican migrant after being shot with a stun gun by a U.S. immigration officer was an unacceptable human rights violation. Migrant Anastasio Hernandez was shocked by a Customs and Border Protection agent May 31 at the San Ysidro border crossing between Tijuana and San Diego. A U.S. coroner has ruled the death a homicide. Calderon said he wanted to repeat Mexico's "energetic protest of the torture and death of Anastasio Hernandez, a Mexico who died at the hands of North American migration authorities."

Mexican and U.S. authorities were "secretly scrambling" last month to thwart a Mexican drug cartel's plot to blow up a Texas dam that would have flooded an area with about 4 million inhabitants, according to the Houston Chronicle's Dane Schiller and James Pinkerton. Law enforcement officials were reportedly tipped off to a plot when they found one of the handbills that the drug cartel Los Zetas was distributing on the Mexican side of the river, warning residents to clear out ahead of the explosion. Authorities found "small amounts of dynamite near the dam," the Chronicle said. Los Zetas wanted to...

In a speech to a joint session of Congress, Calderon described efforts to fight organized crime in Mexico, where 23,000 people have been killed in drug violence since he came to power in late 2006 and launched an army offensive. Washington is also aiding Mexico's battle against drug gangs with a 2007 pledge of $1.4 billion for equipment and police training to help fight the cartels that ship some $40 billion worth of illegal drugs north each year. "There is one issue where Mexico needs your cooperation. And that is stopping the flow of assault weapons and other deadly arms...

After appearing before Congress and attacking Arizona’s new illegal immigration law, Mexican president Felipe Calderón appeared on CNN to talk shop with Wolf Blitzer. Blitzer, rather surprisingly, turned the tables on the president, opting to ask him instead about his country’s immigration laws, and whether they were just as strict (if not stricter) than Arizona’s. Calderón admitted that laws were stringent in the past but clarified that it is currently not illegal to be undocumented in Mexico. Citing a Washington Times article explaining Mexican immigration laws that incriminated those who willfully participated in illegal immigration or helped illegal immigrants, Blitzer...

A Mexican military helicopter flew over the border from the state of Tamaulipas into Texas "amid ongoing fighting between the Gulf Cartel and its former enforcers, Los Zetas" as reported by Lynn Brezosky and Gary Martin for the San Antonio Express-News: The Zapata County sheriff Thursday was questioning why a Mexican military helicopter was hovering over homes on the Texas side of the Rio Grande. It was one of the more jarring incidents of the fourth week of border tensions sparked by drug killings, and rumors of such killings, in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez said he'd...

El Paso, Texas - A Mexican Army Humvee with a machine gun and several soldiers on foot entered into the U.S. through the Columbus Port of Entry early Saturday morning. The incident happened at about 2:35 a.m. Saturday when the Mexican soldiers were chasing three U.S. citizens, according to Customs and Border Patrol spokesperson Roger Maier. The group of soldiers was confronted by CBP inspectors and the soldiers quickly turned around on orders from one of their officers. A few minutes later, a Mexican Army commander arrived and apologized to the U.S. inspectors, claiming the soldiers had been pursuing a...

HOUSTON - Special teams of Texas Rangers will be deployed to the Texas-Mexico border to deal with increasing violence because the federal government has failed to address growing problems there, Gov. Rick Perry said Thursday. "It is an expansive effort with the Rangers playing a more high-profile role than they've ever played before," Perry said of the Department of Public Safety's elite investigative unit. The forces, dubbed "Ranger recon" teams, are the latest effort "to fill the gap that's been left by the federal government's ongoing failure to adequately secure our international border with Mexico," he said. "They'll be deployed...

Mexican authorities have been sending more alleged criminals north to the U.S. for trial since President Felipe Calderon took office. Now a Mexican official is worried about a flow in the other direction. Rommel Moreno, attorney general of Baja California state, expressed concern Friday about a plan in California to release thousands of inmates from that U.S. state's overcrowded prisons as a way to help relieve a budget crunch. Moreno noted many inmates in the California prison system are undocumented migrants, and some could be deported once released. A statement issued by his office said that "the repatriation of ex-convicts...

A senior Mexican official spoke with reporters today, in advance of the North American Leaders summit this weekend. The official, speaking on background, explain that this summit is basically laying the ground work for future endeavors, and advised not expect to see any obvious deliverables – that developing the relationship is essentially the goal. “No two countries are more important to each other’s security, prosperity, and well being than these two countries – simply by virtue of having a 2,000 mile border,” the official said. President Obama will meet with President Filipe Calderon and Prime Minister Harper – in bi-lats...

"How dare you send our citizens back to us"By Christopher Cook You can add legislators from the Mexican state of Sonora to the people whose sense of irony has been surgically removed at birth. It didn't make very big news when it happened (two weeks ago), but for those who missed it, it's a worthy showcase for chutzpah at its finest. And it's a tragic indication of just how absurdly pathetic our neighbor to the south really is: A delegation of nine state legislators from Sonora was in Tucson on Tuesday to say Arizona's new employer sanctions law will have...
