Mary Daly — president of the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank — issued quite the jaw-dropper during a Wednesday Reuters interview about our current inflation woes. "I don't feel the pain of inflation anymore," Daly told interviewer Lindsay Dunsmuir. I'm not immune to gas prices rising, food prices rising, I sometimes balk at the price of things, but I don’t find myself in a space where I have to make trade-offs because I have enough — many,...

Hopefully, you all got what you wanted from Santa this year. But even if you didn’t, you can take some comfort that there are 21 people in New York State who certainly did. Their presents weren’t dropped off by a jolly old elf coming down their chimney, however. Governor Andrew Cuomo decided to play Santa on Christmas eve and handed out nearly two dozen pardons and sentence commutations. He put the announcement on the official New York Governor’s website, along with explanations of each person’s crimes and what impact these gifts would have on them.

Last month, a garbage truck caused a parking lot on Interstate 35 through downtown Austin when it got stuck underneath the overpass at I-35 and 12th Street. To avoid scenes like that from happening in the future, the Texas Department of Transportation is installing a new bridge warning system to detect overheight trucks along the southbound lanes of I-35 between Airport Boulevard and Riverside Drive. KXAN News told you about the workgroup formed last year to address the issue of overheight trucks. The detection system will be placed at three locations along I-35, including just north of Martin Luther King...

Second Thoughts By: William W. Lawrence 06/08/2004 The champagne corks were not popping at 400 N. Broad St., but there were some smiles. Circulation rose a paltry 800 to 387,692, which was an improvement over past years when the left-wing, liberal publication appeared to be in free-fall. In 1999, the Inquirer was losing readers faster than any newspaper of comparable size in the country. An Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC), the largest independent verifier of newspapers' circulation figures, showed that the Inquirer's daily circulation had dipped to just under 402,000 -- a 7.2 percent decrease from the same six-month period...

Revenge is sweet — and thanks to tattoo ink, sometimes permanent — for a growing legion of "scambaiters" who have taken it upon themselves to punish the thieves behind those Nigerian e-mail scams. Posting their exploits online, scambaiters are turning the tables on the scam artists, conning the cons who have bilked unsuspecting people out of countless millions of dollars in a common scam referred to as the "419 scam" or advance-fee fraud. Typically, scammers start an e-mail relationship and get their victims to send money to people who claim to be dying or who need help to free a...

Aug. 14 — lowbridge has added his voice to the growing chorus of FReeper celebs who are criticizing Susan Sarandon post-9/11. The “Accidental Tourist” star is in Long Island, New York, where he’s working concessions on the beach, and preparing for his trip to the FR chapter conference in Las Vegas, and he’s had some frank words about the political climate in Hollywood. LOWBRIDGE SAID that in the days immediately following the attack, the country united in a way that showed “America at its finest.” But, he told the FreeRepublic that “in about the third week a naked, braless cut-out...
