Hours after Hurricane Laura made landfall as a Category 4 storm in southwest Louisiana, a chemical fire has been reported at chlorine production plant just west of Lake Charles Thursday morning. Gov. As Hurricane Laura hit Louisiana overnight, the winds appeared to push a riverboat casino in to the pillars supporting the Interstate 10 bridge. Louisiana State Police Maj. Doug Cain said they received a report that the Isle of Capri’s riverboat casino broke from its mooring and was stuck against the Interstate 10 bridge in Lake Charles. At the end of Tuesday’s City Council meeting, councilwoman Mary Morris added a resolution to the agenda focused on the South’s Defenders monument in front of the Calcasieu Parish Courthouse. Morris’ addition was a resolution asking the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury to remove the monument from the courthouse lawn and remove any other Confederate symbol from display on public property. South African chemical company Sasol Ltd. has given final approval to move forward with an $8.1 billion ethane cracker and derivatives complex at its existing Lake Charles manufacturing facility, the company announced Monday. The ethane cracker will produce 1.5 million tons of ethylene every year.
