Chemical company Sasol to begin construction on $8B ethane cracker complex near Lake Charles

South African chemical company Sasol Ltd. has given final approval to move forward with an $8.1 billion ethane cracker and derivatives complex at its existing Lake Charles manufacturing facility, the company announced Monday.

The ethane cracker will produce 1.5 million tons of ethylene every year. The process involves breaking down the molecules of ethane -- which is found in natural gas -- to create ethylene, a key ingredient for the petrochemical industry. It's used in products like food packaging, fragrances, detergents and tires.

After clearing a key permitting hurdle earlier this year, the company said Monday it has given the cracker project final investment approval.

"Once commissioned, this world-scale petrochemicals complex will roughly triple our chemical production capacity in the United States, enabling Sasol to further strengthen its position in a growing global chemicals market," said Sasol president and CEO David Constable in a news release. "The U.S. Gulf Coast's robust infrastructure for transporting and storing abundant, low-cost ethane was a key driver in our decision to invest in America."

They let it slide because to do otherwise would deep-six Mary Landrieux.

You keep forgetting that Louisiana is a banana republic. If you have the skills to operate there, you have the skills to (dare we say it?) pay off the right federal authorities.

Got a few more days and we will deep-six her ourselves - we PRAY! We are looking for another detestable democrat’s demise.

Are you from Louisiana? If so, how dare you insult my home state. We put Democrat criminals in prison, unlike the Obama America. See: Edwin Edwards, Freezer Bill Jefferson.

MY wife is from New Orleans, and I lived in St. Mary Parish for three years. Edwin Edwards' game of in-and-out of office, using placeholders when he wasn't the governor (not to mention his children's "most favored citizen" status), and Huey P. Long were who I had in mind when I wrote my post. And, if I remember correctly, Jefferson was brought up on federal charges, not a violation of state law, but I could be remembering incorrectly. And the various parishes got new roads when they voted correctly (How long did it take for U.S. 90 out to Morgan City to get to its current much safer condition?)

Now, don't get me wrong. My wife's jambalaya and gumbo, or a good crawfish boil, are my definitions of gustatory heaven. And I seriously enjoyed the view of the cypress and Spanish moss from my living room window. But we have to call things what they really are if we are to make progress.
