PORTLAND, Ore. — Baker County Judge Matthew Shirtcliff announced Tuesday that he will not vacate his injunction that made Oregon Gov. Kate Brown's stay-at-home orders temporarily "null and void." The Oregon Supreme Court issued an alternative writ of mandamus Saturday, which said that Shirtcliff had until 5 p.m. Tuesday to either vacate the injunction or explain why it should remain in place. Since Shirtcliff chose to stand by his original ruling, the state must file a brief with the Oregon Supreme Court by Thursday, May 28 and the plaintiffs must file briefs by Tuesday, June 2. Shirtcliff's decision tossed out...

Former GOP state chairman Kevin Mannix made it official Thursday, entering the race for the Oregon congressional seat being vacated by Democrat Darlene Hooley. Mannix will have to fight for his party's nomination against Mike Erickson, a wealthy businessman from Lake Oswego who ran against Hooley in 2006. On the Democratic side, a primary contest is set between state Sen. Kurt Schrader and political consultant Steve Marks. Some unions have also been quietly floating the idea of a run by Jim Hill, the former state treasurer who ran for governor in 2006. Mannix represented the city of Salem in the...

SALEM, Ore. — Kevin Mannix, the chair of the Oregon GOP, says he will step down next month to prepare for his second gubernatorial campaign. Mannix, an attorney in Salem, told The Oregonian that he decided to speed up his timetable for leaving the chairmanship because the political activity surrounding the 2006 governor’s race is “heating up sooner than expected.” Portland lawyer Ron Saxton, who lost to Mannix in the 2002 Republican primary, also is planning to run again. The two are already competing for endorsements and financial support. Leaving the chairmanship now, Mannix said, will allow him to step...

SEASIDE -- In an unexpected and, at times, rancorous showdown, delegates to the Republicans' annual Dorchester Conference voted Saturday to recommend removing any mention of abortion from their state party platform. The issue pitted two longtime party stalwarts, former U.S. Sen. Bob Packwood and state party Chairman Kevin Mannix, in a face-to-face debate that left more than 350 delegates disagreeing over party unity, party growth, loyalty to respected leaders and possibly to their personal principles. Before voting on the proposal to remove abortion from the platform, an angered Mannix urged delegates to abstain as a way to show party unity....

Four Names You Should Know CRISIS Magazine - e-Letter October 17, 2003 ********************************************** Dear Friend, First, I'm very sorry I didn't send you an e-letter last week. I've been doing a lot of traveling lately, and just wasn't able to sit down long enough to write anything. As it is right now, I'm in Rome for John Paul II's anniversary, and the beatification of Mother Theresa. It's been amazing, and I'll give you a full report as soon as I get back next week. (A couple things have happened that I think you'll find very interesting...) Today, I wanted to...
