SALEM, Ore. Kevin Mannix, the chair of the Oregon GOP, says he will step down next month to prepare for his second gubernatorial campaign.
Mannix, an attorney in Salem, told The Oregonian that he decided to speed up his timetable for leaving the chairmanship because the political activity surrounding the 2006 governors race is heating up sooner than expected.
Portland lawyer Ron Saxton, who lost to Mannix in the 2002 Republican primary, also is planning to run again. The two are already competing for endorsements and financial support.
Leaving the chairmanship now, Mannix said, will allow him to step up his fundraising and speak out more freely about opponents, like Saxton.
A new party chairman will be chosen at a July 16 meeting of the 132-member Republican State Central Committee in Redmond.
Vance Day, a Salem lawyer who is party vice chairman, is the only announced candidate at this point, Mannix said.
I guess he'll have to let Peggy go then.
Y'know, I'm sure Kevin is a great guy and all, but...let someone else run this time!
It isn't about "let" ~ it's about who gets the most votes in the primary.
If you don't like the candidates; why don't you run?

I'm just a regular guy; I have no chance.
I have nothing against Kevin Mannix, but he lost last time against a weak candidate. I think he could do better in his current capacity.
I'd like to see somebody new.
Admittedly, I'm out of the mainstream, as I'd like Ted Ferrioli to run. I'm not crazy about his pushing that navigability bill, but he's solid on everything else, and I reckon he was pushing that to prevent something worse from being passed.
I admit, though, that there aren't a whole lot of stronger candidates than Mannix, which is probably why he's running again.
I admire anyone that runs for office ~ I wouldn't do it.
Mannix lost last time because more liberals voted than conservatives.
It's important to get out the vote, this time!
