PORTLAND, Ore. — Baker County Judge Matthew Shirtcliff announced Tuesday that he will not vacate his injunction that made Oregon Gov. Kate Brown's stay-at-home orders temporarily "null and void." The Oregon Supreme Court issued an alternative writ of mandamus Saturday, which said that Shirtcliff had until 5 p.m. Tuesday to either vacate the injunction or explain why it should remain in place. Since Shirtcliff chose to stand by his original ruling, the state must file a brief with the Oregon Supreme Court by Thursday, May 28 and the plaintiffs must file briefs by Tuesday, June 2. Former GOP state chairman Kevin Mannix made it official Thursday, entering the race for the Oregon congressional seat being vacated by Democrat Darlene Hooley. Mannix will have to fight for his party's nomination against Mike Erickson, a wealthy businessman from Lake Oswego who ran against Hooley in 2006. SALEM, Ore. — Kevin Mannix, the chair of the Oregon GOP, says he will step down next month to prepare for his second gubernatorial campaign. Mannix, an attorney in Salem, told The Oregonian that he decided to speed up his timetable for leaving the chairmanship because the political activity surrounding the 2006 governor’s race is “heating up sooner than expected.” Portland lawyer Ron Saxton, who lost to Mannix in the 2002 Republican primary, also is planning to run again.
