The investigation into the thwarted plot to bomb John F. Kennedy International Airport is widening beyond the four men in custody, with more suspects sought outside the U.S. for their suspected roles, a law enforcement official said Friday. The defendants identified last weekend were "just a piece of it," the official told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because of not being authorized to speak publicly. "We are definitely seeking more players. We are targeting others overseas." The official declined to provide details about the possible suspects, or in what countries they are being sought. Law enforcement officials,...

Four men have been charged with trying to blow up fuel tanks and pipelines at John F Kennedy airport. A grand jury in New York on Friday indicted the men on five counts of conspiracy to bomb the airport. The men, three from Guyana and one from Trinidad, were charged with conspiring to "cause death, serious bodily injury and extensive destruction". Prosecutors say they have links with Islamist militants in the Caribbean and South America. Russell Defreitas, Kareem Ibrahim, Abdul Nur and Abdul Kadir, a former MP for the Caribbean nation of Guyana, were all arrested earlier this month. Defreitas,...

Saudia Kadir Was Arrested On An Unrelated Weapons Possession Charge (CBS/AP) GEORGETOWN, Guyana -- The daughter of a man accused of plotting to blow up John F. Kennedy International Airport fuel lines is free on U.S. $50 bond following her unrelated detention on suspicion of weapons possession. Sauda Kadir told The Associated Press early Sunday that police detained her after they saw photos taken last Christmas showing family members posing with toy guns. Kadir, 31, said she did not know how police obtained the pictures and declined further comment. She was ordered to appear Tuesday at police headquarters for further...

Before the bombing of the USS Cole in 2000, al-Qaida targeted another U.S. destroyer. It wanted to hit the USS The Sullivans. But as recounted in Lawrence Wright's Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Looming Tower, the terror operatives overloaded their skiff with C-4 explosives, causing it to sink harmlessly into the surf. They had to shoo away Yemeni locals who discovered the boat and started throwing the C-4 bricks around. Anyone discovering the operatives at that moment would have concluded that they were buffoons whose ambition to sink an American ship of war far exceeded their capabilities. Of course, nine months...

NEW YORK, USA (UPI): Relatives and friends said the four men arrested in an alleged plot to bomb jet fuel tanks at Kennedy International Airport in New York were wrongly accused. "The man is no extremist," Rudy Thorne, a lifelong friend of Abdel Nur in Guyana told the Friday's Miami Herald. Another suspect, Kareem Ibrahim, told a friend in Trinidad that his Shiite branch of Islam meant peace, not overthrowing governments, Wendell Eversley, the friend, told the newspaper. The Herald said the four suspects -- Nur, Ibrahim, Abdul Kadir, and Russell Defreitas -- are black converts to Islam and three...

Regarding the plot to blow up New York's JFK airport, there's good news and bad news. The good news -- the plotters were caught. The bad news (for liberals) -- the plotters were caught. It's now five years and nine months of BusHitler's "incompetent" and "failed" 'Global Bumper Sticker On Terror' but there's...

The J.F.K. Airport Bomb Plot Q. I live in California and was astounded yesterday to look at my print edition of The Times for the article on the J.F.K. bomb plot and to find it back on page A30! What has happened with the news judgment of your colleagues? A terrorist plot that could have badly damaged the entire economy of the nation, including those of us who live in the Bay Area, and it's relegated to the level of bridge club reports. You might wish to suggest to your editors that your readers do not live in a vacuum,...

The thing that caught our eye in the plot to blow up John F. Kennedy International Airport and its oil lines concerns a detail in respect of the arrest of one of the key Guyanese suspects. It was the fact that the former member of the Guyanese legislature who was fingered in the plot, Abdul Kadir, was arrested in Trinidad on his way to Caracas, Venezuela. According to Mr. Kadir's wife, who was quoted in the Guyanese press, he was there to pick up an Iranian visa that would enable him to attend an Islamic conference in Tehran. No doubt...

This time it was John F. Kennedy International Airport. Nothing new about big-city airports — seven years ago, Los Angeles International Airport was targeted. Nothing new about New York City, either. The World Trade Center was bombed in 1993, and finally destroyed in the 9/11 attacks. The United Nations complex, the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels, the FBI’s Lower Manhattan headquarters, the Brooklyn Bridge, Grand Central Terminal — they’ve all been on the hit list. Big Western cities, in fact, are the hit list. New York, L.A., Chicago, Washington, London, Paris, Madrid . . . on it goes. And, of course,...

Feds Hoped to Snag Bin Laden Nuke Expert in JFK Bomb Plot Monday , June 04, 2007 NEW YORK — Al Qaeda's reported nuclear whiz kid — a "tantalizing terror figure" with a $5 million bounty on his head — was the figure investigators had hoped to snag in their 18-month probe of a plot to blow up a New York airport, the New York Post reported Monday. The name of Adnan Gulshair el-Shukrijumah, reportedly the man Usama bin Laden tapped to lead a previous plot to detonate nuclear bombs simultaneously in several U.S. cities, came up at several points...

Reading the indictment against the four would-be JFK airport bombers, Russell Defreitas, Abdul Nur, Kareem Ibrihim and Abdul Kadir, I was struck by the phrase “together with others” which frequently followed their names. It is on page 1, page 2, page 3, twice on page 4. In the course of the document we are introduced to these others, known only as Individuals A-G. There must be some legal rationale why we can’t know their identities. It surely can’t be to conceal from the Individuals that we know what they were up to; they must have figured out who is which...

A person would be lead to believe that there is nothing to worry about when it comes to homegrown terrorism. We are to believe that the "wanna-be terrorists" are just completely incompetent, or that the federal government has everything firmly in hand and is just waiting to help the Bush Administration look good. Another idea is that the FBI is holding off on arresting terrorists until the Administration feels the country is not scared enough. Then they trot out some bad guys and say "See, be afraid. They could be anywhere." The left refuses to see the possibility of these...

Plot to blow up JFK is 'tip of the iceberg' By Toby Harnden, in Washington Last Updated: 2:16am BST 04/06/2007 The alleged conspiracy to blow up John F Kennedy airport, in New York, and a recent plot to kill soldiers at a nearby United States Army base represent only the "tip of the iceberg" of terrorist plots against America, according to US officials. "There's a lot of activity out there," a counter-terrorism official said yesterday. Abdul Kadir: suspected of plotting to attack fuel line "Obviously, you don't want to tip off every suspect that they are being monitored. On the...

(CBS/AP) NEW YORK -- The question was simple: “Would you like to die as a martyr?” The putative terrorist unhesitatingly replied yes—there was no greater way to die in Islam. The right answer put the man in the midst of a terrorist plot conceived as more devastating than the 9/11 attacks. He was soon making surveillance trips around John F. Kennedy International Airport—the “chicken farm,” as the planners dubbed their target -- and visiting the Trinidad compound of a radical Muslim group. On Saturday, the insider—a twice-convicted drug dealer—was revealed as a government informant whose surreptitious work undermined a plot...

NEW YORK - A convicted drug dealer who agreed to pose as a wannabe terrorist among a shadowy group plotting to blow up John F. Kennedy International Airport secretly fed information to federal investigators in exchange for a lighter sentence. His surveillance trips to the airport with the suspects, travels abroad to meet with supporters and assurances he wanted to die as a martyr in the attack on an underground jet fuel pipeline gave counterterrorism agents insight and evidence that was otherwise unattainable. And his help once again demonstrated the growing importance of informants in the war on terrorism, particularly...

Four men including former PNCR Member of Parliament Abdul Kadir were yesterday charged by United States law enforcement officials with allegedly conspiring to blow up the John F Kennedy International airport as well as tanks storing aviation fuel and underground fuel pipelines. Those charged with Kadir are former JFK worker Russell Defreitas, a Guyanese-born US citizen; Kareem Ibrahim, an imam from Trinidad; and Guyanese Abdel Nur. Kadir and Ibrahim were arrested in Trinidad, while Defreitas was held in New York. Up to press time, however, Nur had not been apprehended and was thought to be still at large in Trinidad....

War is about breaking the enemy’s will. Having laid bare the sorry state of our brains and our guts, jihadists are now zeroing in on the will’s final piece: our hearts. That is the central lesson to be gleaned from Saturday’s news that four Muslim men have been charged with plotting to blow up John F. Kennedy International Airport, and with it much of Queens. We now learn that for radical Islamists, lovers of death, the heart is the jihad’s most coveted prize. Tear it out, and you get to kill not once but twice. So says 63-year-old ringleader, Russell...
