So I'm downloading a Microsoft security update (at microsoft.com) and I get a message: Do you want to update to IE8? Why not, I says to myself, so I check the box. Well, something went wrong. My Favorites, Tools, etc. line has disappeared. And right-click no longer works when I'm online. Any help would be appreciated.

Before reading my question, below, please read my note. NOTE: I am NOT a newbie with computers - have cleared caches, run anti-malware, anti-virus, cleared old restore points, etc. to clear ths problem. You name it - I've done it. Have even checked the Internet for people with the same problem. QUESTION: Is ANY FR person out there experiencing an ABNORMAL shutdown of IE8? It has JUST started on two of my computers recently. After exiting IE8, I ALMOST ALWAYS get the gray dialog box that states "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to shut down." Then, I...

Need IE8 Help ... When I go to certain web sites and want to use something like the "Store Locator" box, I place the cursor in the box and type the Zip Code. Only, the first number does not display. Then, I have to re-position the cursor and type in the first number. Then, it displays. Same thing if I type in the first number [no display], backspace, then type it in, everything is fine. There is no problem in the IE8 Address Bar or the Search Bars and it does not occur using the word processor or spreadsheet programs....

I'm using IE8, and after a recent Windows update, the thumbnails (Google toolbar) that used to appear when I opened a new tab, no longer appear. Is there a setting I need to look for? Anyone else experiencing the same thing?

That didn't take long. One day into the Pwn2Own hacking competition at CanSecWest and already Apple, Microsoft, and Mozilla have been sent packing to their respective labs to work on security issues in their browsers. In a repeat performance, Charlie Miller pocketed a $5,000 cash prize and a fully-patched MacBook by splitting it wide, and gaining full control of the device after a user clicked on his malicious link. Another white-hatter by the name Nils (pictured) toppled Internet Explorer 8 running on a Windows 7 laptop -- again, the five grand and compromised VAIO P laptop are now his to...

Firefox 3.5 trundled passed Internet Explorer 7 in the past few days to become, temporarily at least, the world's most popular web browser. According to analysis outfit StatCounter, Mozilla's latest browser just slipped ahead of Microsoft's surfing tool in the week commencing 7 December by grabbing 21.93 per cent of the global market. But it's of course worth noting that while Firefox might be top dog by version number, it's important to point out that Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 is also pulling in plenty of punters. So when all the stats are combined Microsoft's browser remains the clear winner with...

Hugh Hewitt, me, and a friend all had our computers crash while on the internet today. Rush had his MAC crash on Friday, two other friends experienced the same last week. I have had this Gateway desktop for three years and it has been absolutely bug free. However, in the last three weeks it has been surging then shutting itself down. I reset the settings on IE8 and that worked for several days. Today, complete crash and I had to restore my system in order to boot XP. Stayed in IE6 for a brief period then screen went ziggy and...

Microsoft Corp. today defended the Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) tool that suggests sites based on the URLs typed into its address bar, saying that the browser "phones home" only a limited amount of information to Microsoft and that the company discards all user IP addresses almost immediately. Company managers also contrasted IE8 Beta 2's "Suggested Sites" feature with the "Suggest" feature used by rival Google Inc. in its Chrome browser, saying that Microsoft's browser requires the user's explicit permission before it's used. They did, however, acknowledge a bug that prevents the request from reappearing when users reinstalled the browser. "We...
