VANITY Is it Internet Explorer or a North Korean cyber attack?
me

Posted on 08/10/2009 7:23:58 PM PDT by Havisham

Hugh Hewitt, me, and a friend all had our computers crash while on the internet today. Rush had his MAC crash on Friday, two other friends experienced the same last week. I have had this Gateway desktop for three years and it has been absolutely bug free. However, in the last three weeks it has been surging then shutting itself down. I reset the settings on IE8 and that worked for several days. Today, complete crash and I had to restore my system in order to boot XP. Stayed in IE6 for a brief period then screen went ziggy and froze. I decided to bail on Explorer. I'm in Google Chrome now. What's the experience out there?

My MAC is working like a charm. No problems, and no slow-downs.

Chrome and IE don’t play well together.

Firefox FTW

There were a lot of computers going down today at work, probably 10 times the normal number. The spam e-mail was off the charts. It was getting past all the filters.

Okay then, is this the NKorean cyber attack mentioned on Drudge a couple of weeks ago? A cyber worm?

LOTS of windows updates are being blocked lately, in my experience... so check that all updates are done.

I like Malwarebytes, free to use from
www.download.com

“am I a Bot”? is the name of more software....don’t know this one, but like the name!

Yes, when the problem started I ran the usual scans. McAfee and SpySweeper were all updated and running. I made a gigantic backup of my data, thank goodness. Odd thing is XP didn’t automatically restore from the onboard backup. Looking into that. Malwarebytes..

Wife unit bought a new laptop about a week ago. Updated all the Windoze stuff including the update from IE7 to IE8. Haven’t had any problems.

Check to see that your Java is up to date. There are some vulnerabilities with older versions.

Install Firefox with noscript for casual web surfing.

I have two Macs and don’t use IE. I use Apple’s Safari browser. I’m not sure what browser Rush uses.

If I had to choose between the two things in your title, I’d take my chances with North Koreans.

Get Firefox.

Firefox. VLC Media Player. Picasa. Diamond Cut Audio Restoration Tools.

Favorite software. No problems.

Our IT people rolled out an emergency update this week - gotta hand it to them, they seem to have been in front of whatever it was.

But this poster nominates this thread title funniest of the day. :)

Microsoft Windows, the Rodney Dangerfield of the 21st century.

I’m up and running again, this time on Firefox and Malwarebytes. I reinstalled McAfee and my system became cranky and slow. Any suggestions on a better antivirus freeware?
