Marine Le Pen, the leader of France’s far-right National Front Party, vowed that if she is elected the country’s president she would ban all public displays of religious symbols and clothing, including kippot. Le Pen made the statement during an interview on Sunday with France’s BFM-TV. She is expected to seek the country’s presidency in 2017. She heads the third-largest party in France. Le Pen is seeking to broaden an existing law, called the headscarf ban, that does not allow conspicuous displays of religious symbols in public schools to include all public areas. She called the ban a struggle against...

Turkey's Constitutional Court overturned one of the ruling AK party’s central “reforms” – an amendment to the Turkish constitution that reintroduced Islamic headscarves in public universities, undermining decades of secularism in this Muslim country that wants to join the European Union. The opposition CHP party sued to block the amendment, and the court sided with them 9 to 2. Reuters reports that overturning the amendment is the opening salvo in taking Turkey back from the Islamists: The headscarf amendment plays a central role in a separate, crucial case that seeks to outlaw the AK Party for anti-secular activities, and ban...

An employee at a municipal swimming pool in the Parisian suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis was fired in late March 2004 after the local mayor objected to the man's facial hair. "The external expression of religious beliefs cannot be tolerated where students are taking swimming courses," the mayor said. He continued with a rhetorical question that reflects contemporary concerns about Islam's place in French society: "Is proselytism a real problem in our country or not? Wasn't a law just passed that reminded us all of our duty to respect neutrality in civic life?" The city pool employee, Mourad Lamsanes, insisted he was...

AMMAN (Reuters) - An anxious French government accelerated its diplomatic bid to save two French reporters held hostage in Iraq on Tuesday as a fresh kidnapper deadline neared for Paris to scrap a ban on Muslim headscarves in schools. With the Tuesday evening deadline approaching, the gravity of the reporters' plight was clearly highlighted when Iraqi militants said they had killed 12 Nepali hostages. President Jacques Chirac, refusing to back down over the headscarf ban, led an unprecedented diplomatic push to appeal to the militants holding Georges Malbrunot and Christian Chesnot, shown on Arab television on Monday fearing for their...

PARIS: France tightened up proposed guidelines for a ban of religious headwear in state schools yesterday after teachers complained an earlier draft was too vague and filled with potential loopholes. France last month passed a controversial ban on headscarves, skullcaps and large Christian crosses in a bid to keep tensions between its large Muslim and Jewish populations out of schools. The guidelines were aimed helping schools enforce the ban. The new, shorter draft by Education Minister Francois Fillon includes a revised clause forbidding pupils from citing religious grounds for refusing to remove an item of headwear. It also scraps an...

ELEANOR HALL: In Turkey, Islamic human rights groups are increasing the pressure on the Government to overturn a ban on headscarves. Despite Turkey's majority Muslim population, the Government has banned headscarves in schools, universities, public offices, and from Government functions. Many argue that the headscarf is a symbol of radical Islam, and a threat to Ataturk's legacy of secular statehood. But others say some Muslim women are being barred from an education or from working as public servants because of their faith. This report from our Middle East Correspondent Mark Willacy in Istanbul. MARK WILLACY: Squeezed uncomfortably between Europe and...

HANOVER, 29 April 2004 — Lower Saxony became the second German state to ban Muslim public school teachers from wearing headscarves after regional deputies voted in a new law to that effect yesterday. The state Parliament dominated by a coalition of the conservative Christian Democratic Union and the liberal Free Democrats pushed through the vote, with support from the Social Democrat opposition. On April 1, the legislature in the southern state of Baden-Wuerttemberg voted almost unanimously for a similar law, which goes into effect this month. Germany’s highest tribunal, the constitutional court, ruled in September that Baden-Wuerttemberg was wrong to...

ROME – The debate over headscarves that divided France has reached Italy, with a kindergarten asking a Muslim trainee teacher to remove her headscarf because it might frighten children. The case has made headlines here and prompted debate among politicians and church officials over the role of Muslims in this predominantly Catholic country, just months after a Muslim activist went to court to have a crucifix removed from his son's public school classroom. The issue arose last week when a private kindergarten in Samone, in northern Italy, voiced concern about the headscarf worn by a prospective intern, Moroccan-born Fatima Mouyache,...

The Muslim Students of America (MSA), an Islamic pro-Saddam group active last year in organizing dozens of Iraq war protests throughout the United States, has declared January 17, 2004 as a day of mass protests at French diplomatic establishments in the US against the ban on wearing headscarfs imposed by the government of Northwest Arabia (formerly France or Lalalala France). Read the press release from these radicals below to understand the poetic justice being meted out to Le-Surrenderese (the French) by the same people with whom they so foolishly sided last year against America. MUSLIM STUDENTS ASSOCIATION OF THE U.S....
