  • Octopuses work together with fish to hunt—and the way they share decisions is surprisingly complex

A new study published in Nature Ecology & Evolution lifts the veil on what happens when octopuses and fish hunt together. As it turns out, this cross-species relationship is more complex than anyone expected. Animals of the same species often cooperate—work together to reach some kind of goal. But it's relatively rare to find cooperation between individuals from different species. A classic example you'll be familiar with is the close relationship between dogs and humans, whether in the context of herding sheep or hunting. In these situations, the dog and the human work together to achieve a goal. That's mammals....
  • 333-pound grouper bit in 15 seconds at Destin Fishing Rodeo. Then came the hard part

Apparently, when a fish is hungry, it doesn't take long to get a bite. It only took 15 seconds for the crew aboard the Special K to get the mammoth Warsaw grouper to take the bait, which eventually landed them on the leaderboard of the 74th annual Destin Fishing Rodeo. Garrett Thornton of Blackshear, Georgia, hauled in a 333.8-pound Warsaw while fishing with Capt. Kyle Lowe on the Special K on Oct. 9. The fish weighed 349 pounds before it was gutted. All fish entries in the rodeo are gutted weights. Another new record set: 'Oh, this is a big...
  • ‘A Big Old Fish!’ 350-Pound Warsaw Grouper Caught in Southwest Fla.

A Florida fisherman’s gargantuan catch is reeling in a lot of chatter online. “A big old fish!” the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation exclaimed on Facebook, next to a photo of the fisherman standing by the 350-pound Warsaw grouper. The massive fish was caught by hook-and-line in Southwest Florida, according to the FWC. It’s estimated to be 50 years old, making it the oldest sample collected for the FWC’s program. The grouper was caught in 600 feet of water, biologists said. Warsaw groupers are usually found in waters over 200 feet deep, although juveniles can be found inshore, around jetties...

The enormous fish, identified as a Warsaw grouper, was caught using a hook and line December 29 in about 600 feet of water, according to the FWC’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute. Otoliths are the hard structures located behind the brain of bony fishes, according to the FWC. They help fish hear, maintain balance and orient themselves. Scientists use the growth structure of otoliths to estimate a fish’s age. Warsaw groupers can grow to a length of 7.5 feet and weight of 580 pounds. The record for the largest one caught in Florida is nearly 440 pounds.
  • 500-pound goliath grouper eats shark as shocked Florida fishermen watch: 'He just sucked it in'

There's a reason goliath groupers are called the garbage disposals of the sea — they eat everything in sight, including sharks apparently. A group of fishermen were able to witness a 500-pound grouper's "rare" meal during a fishing trip off the coast of Everglades City, Florida, last week. Captain Jimmy Wheeler with Everglades Fishing Company watched as someone in his group caught a 3-foot shark. As the fisherman started reeling the creature in, a large shadow appeared. Wheeler instantly knew what was going to happen next.

A man in Southwest Florida has quite a fish story to tell! Jon Black from the Crazy Lure Tackle shop in Cape Coral caught what he says is "the largest bottom fish ever from a kayak" in Sanibel, Fla. The YouTube post says the fish measured at 83 inches long and more than 73 inches in girth. They estimate it weighed 552 pounds. Not a bad haul from a kayak with a small fishing pole!

Check out the size of this goliath grouper gathering of the coast of Florida. That is a lot of really big fish. It’s definitely not news that the goliath grouper population in Florida has been steadily on the rise over the past decade. The multitude of groupers is the cause of great concern within the angling community, as there are no natural enemies of the patriarch of the grouper family.

He has net himself a 172kg Queensland grouper - and he isn't letting it go. Not even for the $10,000 he claims to have been offered by a businessman from Tianjin, China. Mr Johnny Tan, 52, owner of seafood restaurant Grouper King, bought the rare 2.3m giant for "between $5,000 to $6,000". It was caught by local fishermen in waters off Pedra Branca on Tuesday evening. "It would have been easier for me to just sell the fish, but this is my first 'big' fish of the year," said Mr Tan. He said that fish this size are popular in...

JUPITER, FL - A dozen divers suited up Tuesday morning for what has become one of the most popular dives in the state of Florida. The divers braved rough seas on a journey to see the goliath grouper, which has made quite an impression off the coast of Jupiter. "About a decade ago they were sparse," Mike Costanzo. "You very seldom saw any. In the last several years, it's just incredible how the population has come back." For the past several years, around 60 divers congregate between September and October on popular dive sites in 90 feet of water. "It...

CHICAGO - A huge Shedd Aquarium grouper that became an instant celebrity — and inspiration to cancer patients — after becoming the first fish in history to receive chemotherapy and bounce back from cancer has died. Shedd officials estimate Bubba the Grouper was 24 when he died Tuesday. The 154-pound "super grouper" was abandoned at the Chicago aquarium in 1987, left at the reception desk in a bucket. Shedd officials nursed the fish — then a she — to health and put her in a tank. Bubba changed gender in the mid-1990s, which is not uncommon for certain kinds of...
