A Florida fishermans gargantuan catch is reeling in a lot of chatter online.
A big old fish! the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation exclaimed on Facebook, next to a photo of the fisherman standing by the 350-pound Warsaw grouper.
The massive fish was caught by hook-and-line in Southwest Florida, according to the FWC. Its estimated to be 50 years old, making it the oldest sample collected for the FWCs program.
The grouper was caught in 600 feet of water, biologists said. Warsaw groupers are usually found in waters over 200 feet deep, although juveniles can be found inshore, around jetties and shallow-water reefs.
Warsaw groupers can grow up to 8 feet long and can weigh nearly 600 pounds. The biggest Warsaw grouper caught in the state weighed 436 pounds and was caught near Destin.
The FWC says they do not encourage the targeting of the Warsaw grouper since the status of the population is the Gulf is currently unknown.
Thats not a fish. Thats a sea monster.
That is a bigun.
Grouper is one of the better tasting fish.
All fish taste good to me. It’s all in the preparation.
Amen.
My Mother used to fry sucker where there were no bones. It was really tasty.
What is the second graphic (on the right side) in the photo supposed to be?
Grouper in a fine dine rest will set ya back a few bucks.
IMO one of the best out there and fortunate not to have to pay for it at Mkt price
They’re illegal to catch in Texas but that’s merely the tip of the “stupid” iceberg from the TP&W.
That jerk should have released the fish.
That jerk reeled in a boat load of frigen cash it case you missed it.
Looks like a prehistoric flesh cutting tool.
Anyway, I guess the guy with the big smile did not get the memo that a lot of people online get really, really, really upset when hunters and fishermen proudly kill beautiful or awesome creatures that live in the natural world.
It does look like that.
Grouper eats other fish, thereby accumulating mercury.
But if it tastes good, I will try it in a restaurant. It is widely available here in Florida restaurants.
Guy with big smile did not care. He caught a frigen wamajama and is going to the bank with it.
That’s what 500 fried grouper sandwiches looks like.
He can sell it?
For 50 year old meat?
Wall trophy?
Both?
How much do you estimate?
got me.
Ask a customer at 15th St Fisheries from NY or where ever its frigen winter how much they pay for Grouper Fingers or something else Grouper smothered in Garlic and if they give a crap how old the fish was.
15th St dont care and laugh all the way to the bank
I saw a report several years ago by some government agency that something like 70% of fish labeled “Grouper” in supermarkets was fake.
