On November 8, the University at Buffalo Intercultural and Diversity Center (IDC) is sponsoring an event titled “The Real History of Thanksgiving” as a part of their “Tough Topics” discussion series. “Why is Thanksgiving still celebrated in America when the truth behind the holiday is the massacre of Indigenous communities? How can we erase this whitewashed history for good? Come out to the IDC to...

NEW YORK, Nov 12 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Climate change opponents plan to stage a hunger strike to demand a meeting with U.S. Congressional leader Nancy Pelosi, they said on Tuesday, in the political battle over global warming. The protesters said they want a one-hour on-camera meeting with Pelosi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, to discuss reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2025. "You have yet to pass even symbolic legislation recognizing the climate crisis as a national emergency. With all due respect, you have failed," they said in an open letter. "Meet with us or leave...

A small group of demonstrators protesting police brutality, poverty and inequality marched on the Mummers Parade this New Year's Day. The demonstration ended with two people being arrested. The group of about 50 marched toward the Broad Street parade route around 1 p.m. Friday and at one point tried to pushed past police to get into the street, but were held back. The demonstrators instead kept to the crowded sidewalks and walked down blocked side streets around Center City. "I think this movement here has changed the conversation a lot," said Lucy Duncan as she held a large sign carrying...

Toronto's Catholic Register is parrotting this story from RNS referring to a front-page article at L'Osservatore Romano calling the cartoons of Mohomet "blasphemous." This is quite incredible really. One can blaspheme God. One cannot blaspheme a man. If Mahomet ever really existed can be debated. If he did, he was a warlord; a murderer, a child-molester and a Jew-hating Christ denier -- and antichrist. He was no prophet. I'm not suggesting that we should engage in mocking anyone; but I won't call the mocking of a man, blasphemy because it is not. Shame on those Catholics who would use such...

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. -- Gunmen stormed a Kissimmee home and put two families' lives in danger. But deputies said a set of car keys led to their arrests. The suspects were arrested a short time after the home invasion. Deputies said they ransacked a home on Sample Street Wednesday night, armed with guns and aimed them right at the victims. However, they made a crucial mistake that led to their capture. One of the women, who lives in the house, was sitting out on the patio Wednesday night, when a group of men, armed with guns forced her back inside....

The former Democratic President asserted Gore could accomplish much more in the White House than he ever could as a private citizen, saying to Stephanopoulos, "His burning issue now...

Two on Daley staff accused of doling out patronage jobs Feds say drunk, 'goofballs' hired; scandal moves closer to mayor July 20, 2005 CHICAGO (AP) -- One was a drunk. Some were laughed at as "goofballs." One was declared the best-qualified candidate for a job on the city payroll -- even though he was dead. All of them were recommended for city jobs or hired because they were politically connected and helped to get out the vote on Election Day, according to U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald. "That's the world we want to end," Fitzgerald said Monday in announcing charges...

Durbin’s “Silent Scream” In a cornfield last year, a group of citizens gathered to select their candidate for the 2004 Democratic Convention. This happened in dozens of farms and homes and meeting places all over the state. Their final decision? John Kerry. The losing candidate was someone who was the prohibitive front runner all of 2003. It was a shoe-in. But there was only one problem. The citizens of Iowa chose someone else. To Howard Dean in must’ve been a shock. Leading all the way for a year, only to be slapped upside the head with a cheap right. He...

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A day after dozens of peace activists boarded double-decker buses and a taxi to travel from London to Baghdad in hopes of preventing bombing by the U.S. and its allies, the Bush administration criticized their efforts. "We would not recommend that people allow themselves to be used by a tyrant and a dictator who has a history of doing horrible things to even his own people as well as his neighbors," White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card told Fox News Sunday. "So this is not the time for people to call themselves human shields." On Saturday,...

Richard Byrne is leading a protest at Northwood army baseAnti-war group Voices in the Wilderness is protesting at the armed forces' HQ in Northwood, west London, on Saturday, against possible conflict with Iraq. Protester Richard Byrne explains why he thinks military action would be catastrophic. "I am opposed to the war on Iraq for lots of reasons, mainly because it is likely to cause massive civilian casualties. Like the porky guy with the chemical weapons doesn't? Ever hear of the secret police? - Ivan And also because all violence produces cycles of violence which come back again and again. Perhaps...
