'I'm protesting for Iraq's children' (VOMITING TILL YOU DIE ALERT)
BBC News ^ | January 18, 2003 | BBC News

Richard Byrne is leading a protest at Northwood army base

Anti-war group Voices in the Wilderness is protesting at the armed forces' HQ in Northwood, west London, on Saturday, against possible conflict with Iraq.

Protester Richard Byrne explains why he thinks military action would be catastrophic.

"I am opposed to the war on Iraq for lots of reasons, mainly because it is likely to cause massive civilian casualties.

Like the porky guy with the chemical weapons doesn't? Ever hear of the secret police? - Ivan

And also because all violence produces cycles of violence which come back again and again.

Perhaps someone should explain that to Saddam first - after all, he invaded both Iran and Kuwait - Ivan

After the attack on Iraq in 1991, the UN assessment team described the scene there as "near apocalyptic destruction, with most modern means of life support destroyed or rendered tenuous."

Like Saddam was going to show them anything he didn't want them to see - Ivan

Twelve years of comprehensive economic UN sanctions have greatly reduced Iraq's ability to repair that damage.

Ever hear of "Oil for Food", moron? The thing that is limiting Saddam from repairing anything is Saddam, and the fact that he wants 50 odd presidential palaces - Ivan

I saw the effects of that for myself when I visited Iraq in January 2001 - children dying quietly in hospital wards from malnutrition and pneumonia.

Again, ever hear of "Oil for Food" - perhaps you ought to ask Saddam to cut back on the caviar for once before you blame the West - Ivan

They are less obvious than the people killed directly by bombing raids.

They are the children killed by sanctions - the weapon of mass destruction Hans Blix is not looking for but which he will encounter everywhere in Iraq.

A weapon apparently deployed by Saddam with great effect on the idiotic and gullible - Ivan

In Iraq children get diarrhoea from dirty drinking water because Iraq's public health infrastructure, which before 1990 compared well with western Europe, was largely destroyed by the bombing in 1991.

Iraq is in the Third World. Being in the 3rd World, means infrastructure is crap. As such, the fact remains that Saddam is running the place into the ground - which means he should be removed, and you, you fool, should be protesting Saddam, not George W. Bush - Ivan

'Oppose all wars'

They get treated in hospital, they get better, they go back to the dirty water, they come back into hospital.

Every time they come back they are a bit more malnourished, their immune systems a bit more depleted, on a downward spiral.

Uh, why didn't you tell them, boil the water before you drink it? - Ivan

Carol de Rooy, head of UN children's body Unicef, estimated nearly one in four children in Iraq under the age of five is now malnourished.

This war that George Bush seems to want so much will produce many more dead and malnourished children in Iraq.

No, Saddam will be removed and all sanctions removed. Plus, he won't be able to rob the Iraqi people anymore so they can afford to eat and live better. Why are you so opposed to this idea, may I ask - Ivan

Medact, the global health campaign, estimates between 48,000 and 500,000 people, predominantly civilians, could die.

And the more horrific the statistic, the more you want to believe it. Are you related to Scott Ritter? - Ivan

And the UN estimates that the impact would be worse than the first Gulf attacks.

There are about 22 million people in Iraq, 9.6 million of whom are under the age of 16.

They will be most affected by war. It is children whom all wars affect the most.

As I have worked for the last few years campaigning against sanctions on Iraq and lately against the "war on terrorism", I have realised we have to oppose all war, not just some wars.

Osama bin Laden thanks you, as does every other evil dictator in the world who does not share your pacifist philosophy. Standing up to evil is necessary, otherwise you condone it - Ivan

Military machine

When we talk about the war on Iraq - whether the weapons inspectors might find something, whether there will be another UN resolution or not - it all ultimately distracts from the truth that our addiction to weapons and militarism will always drive government policy to condemn children to suffer.

I'll wager you're unmarried, have no spouse, and thus have no idea about protecting them from terrorist attacks - Ivan

That is why this weekend's protest is so important.

It is right to try to influence politicians while we are stuck with them, but it is easy to become too focused on the politicians and forget that every person who works in the military is making an individual choice to help the war machine.

Some of them make that choice at a ridiculously young age.

At Northwood, Britain's military HQ where we will be gathering this weekend, the people who run the war machine spend every day planning wars, looking around the world to see what "use" Britain can put it's military to, to further Britain's economic and strategic interests.

We have to do what we can to disrupt the war machine and we have to drag Northwood out of the shadows and put it on the map.

I hope that people will keep coming back to Northwood once they know what an important part of the war machine it is.

Maybe if enough people do, then Britain's ability to ruin futures for children all over the world will be diminished.

I have seen some leftist goofballs in my time, but this one takes the cake. He obviously is spoiled - that much is clear - but beyond that, the consistent stupidity and the racism of the man, being unable to see that anyone browner than himself might have the ability to be evil - is incredible. I suggest you let him know how you feel.

You can see this fellow's site at:

Voices in the Wilderness

Go on, tell him you care. ;)

I caught this statement on the post. "We have to drag Northwood out of the shadows and put it on the map". Worked for two years 1948-50 in Northwood High Street. My next "job" was National Service(conscription).

This "History of Mr Polly ",Edwardian Street, was visited by me, 25 years later. Buildings there- old pub the Clifton/Iron Bridge there. Multi-culture taken over almost everything. I do digress though.

1944 Summer, just two kids going to play scratch cricket, watching. A flying bomb hit Addison Way, Northwood. The laconic press statement said..... an "elderly woman died" - yeah, not much I suppose. Later I learned two women had died, from this guided missile.

A nation had gone to war, to try to stop more bombings like Warsaw, and Rotterdam, and belatedly Guernica. A nation may now have to go to war, to stop "bombings" like the WTC and countless other cowardly atrocities.

May the ghost of civilian dead haunt these flabby, misguided dupes.

All leftists are either liars or fools or both, usually both. In some cases, such as this one, you must assume they are lying because noone can be this stupid. Were they truthful it would be interesting to ask them what they think would happen if the U.S. and Britain were to completely disarm and disband their militaries. What would the terrorists, who have openly declared war on the U.S. and Israel, do? What would Iraq, who has already attacked Kuwait and Iran, do? What about China, who has declared the destruction of the U.S. as its main goal, though that fact is smothered by the media? What about Russia or even France and Germany?

To us, the answer is obvious but were you to confront them they would respond with a equally implausable senario, like world peace would break out all over.

All leftists have the luxury to denounce the U.S. and the military because the U.S. and the military protect and defend their rights to do so. It is freedom without responsibility, just like all leftists policies and positions.

ROFL!!

"because noone can be this stupid"
I beg to differ!
Usually, when the truth surfaces, these types of people just give you that blank duh stare and you can see the struggle to connect A to B and they still can't fathom how wrong they were.

Is it just me, or does that soccer guy look like he got hit by an exploding boob?

Great commentary. Yeah, he really believes this stuff too. Someone ought to ask him what the people liberated from Auschwitz thought of war. Iraqi people will be LIBERATED as well. They have no freedoms right now.

I believe some of their desperation is fuelled by the fact that subconsciously they must know they are on the wrong side of history. When the files of the secret police are published, and prisoners released, when dissidents speak up and the scars of torture are shown, when the truth finally emerges to historians about the barbarity of Saddam's regime - these people will seem as odd, irrelevant and thoroughly wrong as those who did not want to stand up to Hitler.

WorldNetDaily.com: "NO LONGER AN ACCIDENT" -Commentary by Jack Cashill (COMMENTARY SNIPPET: "A fourth point of interest is the behavior of President Bill Clinton. Although she served as an adviser to Clinton during his 1992 campaign, Mylroie finds his reaction to Iraqi-backed terrorism "inexplicable." In fact, throughout the book, Mylroie quietly condemns the seeming "policy disarray" that leads time and again to inaction. The administration, she notes, suffered from the inability to tell the truth about Iraq even to itself.") (111902)

There's no difference between him and the 'Wimmin' who campaigned against the American airbase at Greenham Common (and also banned men from their camp because, of course, ALL men are evil oppressors). Their arguments are based on blinkered thinking: 'USA is the oppressor; everyone else, including Islamofascists, is oppressed'. There's no rationality to their arguments, which are totally based on sanctimony rather than reason. I've met numerous members of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament whose main argument against nuclear weapons is that, if used, 'they'll kill alot of prople'.

Conditions (political and economic) in N. Korea are as bad, if not worse than in Iraq. Do you support a military invasion, for the purpose of regime change, of N. Korea as well?

I propose squeezing the regime to death economically. North Korea doesn't have oil to smuggle to sustain that regime.

But make no mistake, I want Kim Jong-Il's regime dead too.
