The film elevated animation to an art form and was a true labor of love for its architect.Walt Disney’s third animated feature, 1940’s Fantasia, was a watershed moment in American cinema. The studio’s first two animated movies – Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Pinocchio – had been groundbreaking, and financially risky, works that had wowed audiences and been enormous commercial successes. Unwilling to rest on his laurels, Walt Disney envisioned Fantasia as a new type of movie – a series of kaleidoscopic and vivid animated sequences set to landmark classical music pieces, bringing high art to the...

  • Chinese property developer Fantasia just missed a $206 million repayment deadline, a sign that China's real estate woes extend beyond Evergrande

Chinese property developer Fantasia Holdings failed to repay a $206 million bond payment due Monday, said the company, just two weeks after it said it had no liquidity issues. The missed payment adds to the already immense strain on China's real estate sector, which has been left exposed to the $305 billion credit crunch from property giant Evergrande, the most indebted company in the world. Fantasia is worth $415 million, reported Reuters, a drop in the ocean compared to Evergrande's crisis. But its bond default contributes to fears that an imminent major collapse in China's property market could destabilize the...

Hollywood has a reputation for being a liberal bastion of political correctness. But as these appalling movies show, it wasn't always so. Some of them—such as 1975's Mandingo—are almost fetishistically racist. Others are fantastic movies degraded because stereotypical characters such as Long Duk Dong from "Sixteen Candles" or Mr. Yunioshi from "Breakfast at Tiffany's." We've compiled a list of the worst racist indiscretions made in Hollywood from the very birth of film. And there are a lot. Warning: Some of this material may be upsetting. 21. "North" (1994) had Inuit/Eskimo racism in one ridiculous scene. In this strange and terrible...

I’ve not followed the life and times of Fantasia Barrino, American Idol’s 2004 Season 3 winner. But when I read the tragic revelation last week that Fantasia attempted to kill herself in August following an abortion, I brought myself up to speed. Little did LifeNews.com know the backstory when originally reporting Fantasia’s suicide attempt, particularly when writing she “once chose life – when faced with an unexpected pregnancy.” That was in 2001, when Fantasia, a 17-yr-old unmarried high school drop out, gave birth to daughter Zion (pictured, left, with Fantasia last week). Nine years later, at the height of fame...

It's been a rough week for Fantasia Barrino. The American Idol season 3 champ was hospitalized Monday in Charlotte, N.C., after overdosing on aspirin and a sleep aid, her manager Brian Dickens confirmed Tuesday. "Her injuries are not life threatening. She was dehydrated and exhausted at the time," Dickens said. "Fantasia is stable now. She will be released from the hospital soon." According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the incident was classified as a suicide attempt. The police report lists Dickens as the reporting person and says Barrino was found with "possible internal injuries."

The United States and its ally South Korea have drawn up a contingency plan to cope with emergencies in North Korea, including a possible regime change there, a report said Sunday. "Operational Plan (OPLAN) 5029" was completed by Seoul and Washington recently, Yonhap news agency said, quoting an unnamed Seoul source. It dictates how to respond case-by-case to such emergencies in North Korea as a civil war, an outflow of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), a mass influx of refugees or a natural disaster, Yonhap said. Under the plan, the United States assumes the role of eliminating North Korea's WMDs,...

I have had a few people comment on my homepage and the censoring of the Disney classic "Fantasia". I have found a link to this blog which reveals "Sunflower" in all her glory. Andrea, the owner, took a recording from "The Wonderful World of Color" aired in the 50's and spliced the character back into the original film. For a long time, Disney denied this character existed and released the 40th aniversary addition of Fantasia "uncut" but without Sunflower in the Pastoral Symphony.Enjoy!

NEW YORK - The father of "American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino has filed a $10 million libel suit against the publisher of a book about his daughter, alleging that it contains "false, exaggerated, sensational, intentional and malicious untruths." In papers filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, Joseph Barrino is seeking damages from Simon & Schuster, which released "Fantasia: Life Is Not a Fairy Tale" in 2005. The book was made into a TV movie, starring Fantasia, that aired on the Lifetime network in August. Among the details disputed by Joseph Barrino: that he was hostile to the music...

The real story is already emerging, if you're willing to do a little digging. Cheney and Whittington went hunting with two women (not their wives), there was some drinking, and Whittington wound up shot. Armstrong didn't see the incident but claimed she had, Cheney refused to be questioned by the Sheriff until the next morning, and a born-again evangelical physician has been downplaying Whittington's injuries since they occurrred. Neither the press nor law enforcement seems inclined to investigate. Before the right-wing commenters howl - there's documentation for all of these statements. Let's take them one by one: In addition to...

“American Idol”: Who’s Your (Baby)Daddy? April 6, 2005 By Debbie Schlussel Being an unwed teen mother is “a badge of honor,” right? That was the scheduled message of this week’s “American Idol,” courtesy of Fantasia Barrino. Barrino—the young unwed, single mother who won last season’s “AI”— was set to showcase her biggest song, “Baby Mama,” according to weeks of press reports. Fortunately, at the last minute, she performed another song. “Baby Mama” couldn’t send a worse message to young American girls—and boys—that watch the show in droves. Barrino sings that being a “Baby Mama”— an unwed, single mother—is a good...

Something strange is abreast with Knickknack, the critically acclaimed 1989 short that precedes Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo at theaters nationwide.

The short follows the hapless attempts of a lonely snow-globe snowman to escape his domain and join a plastic Miami beach bunny. The movie was released on a G-rated 1996 video collection called Tiny Toy Stories. But in that version, the Miami beauty and a mermaid who appears at the end of the short were more well-endowed than they are today.
