Those who continue to believe that Romney can be stopped are focused — as is the campaign of Newt Gingrich — on the possibility of a long delegate fight. They have largely given up hope of anyone winning a knockout victory over Romney, hoping instead that some other candidate can prevent the former Massachusetts governor from wrapping the race up before the Republican National Convention, which is set for Tampa, Fla., in late August. “We have never gone through a delegate fight like this,” said Bob Vander Plaats, an influential conservative and the head of the Iowa-based Family Leader organization....

Jed Lowrie hit two home runs and knocked in three as the Red Sox handed the Yankees an 8-4 loss on the final day of the season to deny New York a chance at a second straight American League East title. ...While Boston (89-73) is sitting out postseason play for the first time since 2006, it cost rival New York (95-67) a shot at wrapping up homefield advantage throughout the AL playoffs, as the Yankees needed a win and a Tampa Bay loss Sunday to do so. The two teams came into the final day of the regular season with...

A vehicle getting 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline. A vehicle getting 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year. So, the average Clunker transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year. They claim 700,000 vehicles – so that's 224 million gallons per year. That equates to saving a bit over 5 million barrels of oil per year. I repeat - per YEAR. 5 million barrels of oil is about ¼ of one day's U.S. consumption. And, 5 million barrels of oil costs about $350...

About one thing Mike Huckabee is right (OK, maybe two): The presidential hopeful told Chris Matthews that if Republicans want to win the 2008 election, they must nominate a candidate who'll appeal to as many independents and Democrats as possible. Dark horse Huckabee expressed the hope that he was the man. Wishful thinking aside, when it comes to Iraq, Huckabee and the rest of the Republican candidates for president, bar Ron Paul, are at odds with the American people. According to every conceivable poll – Gallup, Rasmussen, ABC News/Washington Post – most Americans now oppose the war in Iraq, deem...

LANESVILLE, Ind. -- A 23-year-old man who was caring for a 14-foot snake in southern Indiana was found dead Monday night. Officials did not know how the man died and would not speculate. The body of the man, identified as Patrick Von Allmen, was to go to the Kentucky Medical Examiner's Office in Louisville for an autopsy Tuesday. Mark Farmer, an Indiana Department of Natural Resources spokesman, said Von Allmen was found in a shed in Lanesville and that the 14-foot reticulated python was found loose in the shed. The snake was captured and returned to the man's family. Indiana...

I heard on an "end of the year summary" that 3/11 Spain 2004, occurred 911 days after 9/11 2001. If true, is anyone concerned that it will soon be 311 days since 3/11. No, I'm not a conspiracy theorist. I'd be happy to see it debunked. I'm just curious, and perhaps behind the times.
