A vehicle getting 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline.
A vehicle getting 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year.
So, the average Clunker transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year.
They claim 700,000 vehicles so that's 224 million gallons per year.
That equates to saving a bit over 5 million barrels of oil per year. I repeat - per YEAR.
5 million barrels of oil is about ¼ of one day's U.S. consumption.
And, 5 million barrels of oil costs about $350 million dollars at $75/bbl.
Our Government "gave" each Clunker Trader $4,500 per car for 700,000 transactions which cost US Taxpayers $3,150,000,000 (that would be 3.15 BILLION dollars) - not including Washington's astounding Administrative costs.
So, we all contributed through our taxes to spend more than $3 billion to save $350 million.
How good a deal was that?
They'll probably do a great job with health care, though.
C4C was silly, but they didn’t give $4,500 for every car, and this calculation of fuel savings is only for the first year. The cars will be on the road for many years.
The wiseacrez in Washington are really cutting a better deal than that because they aren’t paying the dealers. So the real cost would be the astounding administrative costs, and their credibility.
You get about 20 gallons of gasoline from a 42 gallon barrel of oil.
how much fuel is/was Bush/Obama selling to our enemies
in Iraq and Afghanistan at subsidized prices?
Government math, where emotions pulverize concrete numbers.
This has nothing to do with saving gas. It was just ANOTHER gift to the Auto Unions. Now they can come to work another couple of months until they break the bank for the 18th time. I figure they will need money again about Febuary.
Broken Windows Fallacy: The government just broke a bunch of windows so that auto workers can have something to do.
Bastiat’s original parable of the broken window went like this:
Have you ever witnessed the anger of the good shopkeeper, James Goodfellow, when his careless son happened to break a pane of glass? If you have been present at such a scene, you will most assuredly bear witness to the fact, that every one of the spectators, were there even thirty of them, by common consent apparently, offered the unfortunate owner this invariable consolation”It is an ill wind that blows nobody good. Everybody must live, and what would become of the glaziers if panes of glass were never broken?”
Now, this form of condolence contains an entire theory, which it will be well to show up in this simple case, seeing that it is precisely the same as that which, unhappily, regulates the greater part of our economical institutions.
Suppose it cost six francs to repair the damage, and you say that the accident brings six francs to the glazier’s tradethat it encourages that trade to the amount of six francsI grant it; I have not a word to say against it; you reason justly. The glazier comes, performs his task, receives his six francs, rubs his hands, and, in his heart, blesses the careless child. All this is that which is seen.
But if, on the other hand, you come to the conclusion, as is too often the case, that it is a good thing to break windows, that it causes money to circulate, and that the encouragement of industry in general will be the result of it, you will oblige me to call out, “Stop there! Your theory is confined to that which is seen; it takes no account of that which is not seen.”
It is not seen that as our shopkeeper has spent six francs upon one thing, he cannot spend them upon another. It is not seen that if he had not had a window to replace, he would, perhaps, have replaced his old shoes, or added another book to his library. In short, he would have employed his six francs in some way, which this accident has prevented.
So maybe if all those new cars last say 8-10 years each would we about break even? :)
I don't even see things THAT way.
The Obama "Joker" pics are SO right on because of the sheer madness I believe I am aware of.
The serpent in The Garden never elaborated much beyond the question, "Yea, hath God said?"
Eve responded with her own combination of fact and truth, and the serpent just used THAT to further his plan to dethrone God from man's mind.
We're being handed a bill of goods in clunkers, health care, ACORN etc.
The ultimate goal is to usurp the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and replace Him with Satan.
THAT is why America is (and always has been) the target of evil ... we started with a God accepting consciousness. We accepted the fact that there IS a God, He is the Creator and we are willing to be directed by Him.
What we are witnessing today is just another version of the Faukland Islands ... all eyes on a diversion while Israel struggles against a more immediate Satanic affront.
And Jimmeh Cahtah is still on the scene
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
That’s really the bottom line.
They said 5 million barrels EVERY YEAR. Regardless of that the argument still holds. It was silly to spend that sort of money to get so little in return. Further and probably more important, destroying usable assets was even sillier in the face of needy people who could have used. them. Now, because of c4c, used car prices are going up. Good work Obama.
What does money matter when we’re saving the planet?
Bingo! A gift to the unions of taxpayer money.
Amen
We also wasted the resources to build the wrecked cars and the energy it took to make them
Not when you consider all the interest our great great great grandchildren will have to pay on the money the government borrowed to run this scam.
Ping.
Much quicker when Barry causes the price of fuel to double... :-)
Yes, the math is off. They divided the 224M by 42 because there are 42 gallons of oil in a barrel, but you actually only get about 19-20 gallons of gasoline from a barrel of oil.
Of course, we are depending on CARS numbers provided by the admin, and we really haven’t seen a complete report yet.
We know a lot of F-150’s and Silverados were purchased, both were actually in the top 10, which puts a dent in the FE numbers given to us. The 10mpg average improvement may be well off for all anyone knows.
