FALLS CHURCH, Va. — A federal judge on Monday issued a temporary restraining order barring removal of a memorial to Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. A group called Defend Arlington, affiliated with a group called Save Southern Heritage Florida, filed a lawsuit Sunday in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, seeking the restraining order. A hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday. Work to remove the memorial had begun Monday before the restraining order was issued, but the memorial remains in place on cemetery grounds. A cemetery spokesperson said Monday that Arlington is complying with the restraining order, but referred all...

1/ Within the next several days, barring intervention from Congress, the Biden Regime, in violation of the law, will remove the Confederate Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery, commissioned to celebrate the reconciliation of North and South. @blueandgray1864 @oilfieldRando 2/ The memorial is considered the masterwork of the renowned Jewish-American sculptor Sir Moses Ezekiel (a former Confederate soldier who was described by his biographer as “adamantly opposed to slavery") who is buried at its base. 3/ Ezekiel, knighted by the King of Italy, was so dedicated to North-South reconciliation that he would later host commanding Union General Ulysses S. Grant at...

The names, below, are a few of the 375,000 Confederate soldiers about whom Union soldier and president of the United States, William McKinley, said: . . . every soldier’s grave made during our unfortunate civil war is a tribute to American valor . . . And the time has now come . . . when in the spirit of fraternity we should share in the care of the graves of the Confederate soldiers . . . The cordial feeling now happily existing between the North and South prompts this gracious act and if it needed further justification it is found...

Opponents of the proposed removal of Confederate memorials in New Orleans are using social media to organize the fight to keep them where they stand. What started out as an effort to keep the statue of Robert E. Lee atop his column in Lee Circle, has expanded its mission to include defending all of the statues and monuments dedicated to the Confederacy. The City Council, at Mayor Mitch Landrieu's request, has begun a formal hearing process that could result in the removal of Lee and monuments dedicated to P.G.T. Beauregard, another Confederate general; Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy;...
  • Group calls for removal of Confederate monument in Seattle

SEATTLE - A Confederate monument in Capitol Hill's Lake View Cemetery is in the spotlight as a local group calls for its removal. For more than a century, Lake View Cemetery has been the final resting place for many of Seattle's pioneers. Only a short walk from one of the cemetery's most visited grave sites - that of Bruce Lee - a 14-foot granite monument memorializes Washington state's Confederate veterans and their families. "Just because it's a military memorial doesn't justify it," Charlette LaFevere says. "It's offensive." LeFevere is part of a small group calling on Seattle City leaders to...

Confederate History and Heritage Month Tennessee Senator Edward Ward Carmack said it best in 1903: “The Confederate Soldiers were our kinfolk and our heroes. We testify to the country our enduring fidelity to their memory. We commemorate their valor and devotion. There were some things that were not surrendered at Appomattox. We did not surrender our rights and history; nor was it one of the conditions of surrender that unfriendly lips should be suffered to tell the story of that war or that unfriendly hands should write the epitaphs of the Confederate dead. We have the right to teach our...

I regret to inform you of the progress made in the Repair the Mace project. None has been made at all. Consequently, alumni dismay has grown into an infectious disgust with the way things are handled (mishandled!) on the Mountain. The mistreatment there in Sewanee of Louise Claiborne-Armstrong’s beautiful ceremonial gift must cease with all immediate urgency. In a story that began on the front page of the first section of the New York Times, we see that The University of the South's famed processional Mace appeared in the middle of page A28 on November 30, 2005, and also in...

NASHVILLE - A black doctor has offered $50,000 to a Southern heritage group to buy the naming rights to a Vanderbilt University dormitory at the center of a legal fight over the word "Confederate." Dr. Eddie Hamilton, a 1985 Vanderbilt graduate, has offered the money and hopes others will chip in. He hopes the school will give the United Daughters of the Confederacy money to rename Confederate Memorial Hall. Hamilton said he felt moved to make the public offer after an appeals court ruled against Vanderbilt's plan to strip the word off the building. "Anything that makes reference to the...

At least it's a civil war. "Let me put it gently: Have you lost your mind?" reader Richard Curtis queried after Monday's column on the vandalizing of a Seattle cemetery monument to local veterans of the Civil War who later helped build this state. Veterans of the Civil War who fought on the side of the South, that is. Why, Curtis wondered, should we feel badly that a "monument to racists has been destroyed? A monument to racist scum who went off to fight for an evil system? The notion is obscene," he said. The only thing he and scores...
